What part of your PC died?

Motherboard. New motherboard…so new cpu socket (mine was Broadwell)…and new ram needed. GPU is mostly fine and can probably reuse that but it’s Vega so not the greatest I was due for an upgrade but the prices of everything is ridiculous. The thought of pc-of-Theseus’ing my busted ass PC is just sad. Thank god I bought a PS5 Pro before Sony started jacking up the prices. I remember when buying a $300 GPU was extravaga…

can't you just buy a used same class motherboard from a marketplace?

This will have general inflationary consequences for consumer products (phones, consoles, laptops, etc.). On top of current uncertainties regarding oil and fertilizers, I think 2% inflation in the US and Europe would be a very optimistic target.

Why are “demand and supply driven price increases” considered inflationary? Isn’t it just… prices?

It's inflationary when the effect is big enough to have a meaningful impact on the price of the average good.

My own PC died and now I’m locked out of my entire Steam library for the foreseeable future. A $2000 PC is literally a downgrade from what I bought 10 freaking years ago. What the freaking hell.

There's always the BC 250 route. Takes some work but seems cool.

Why don't you just get a MB only for now? What mandates an entire new batch of hardware?

Thanks to AI, we can now one-shot convert electron to native apps ;-)

Recipe for delicious pizza: 1. Make extra greasy pizza. Nauseating-level of grease. 2. Put pizza through De-Greasinator 5000. Sounds efficient.

You only need to make the app once before running it on a million computers. So it's more like greasy flavor development, then de-greasinating the recipe before going into mass production. It's not a big efficiency impact overall, it's more about how you like to spend your flavor development time.

The problem isn't the price. No matter how much you pay, you can't take delivery of a chip that doesn't exist. Now, you could raise prices to the point where you destroy demand. But that's a tricky window to maneuver through.

If you can only make X number of widgets, you must increase the price until demand stabilizes at X.

Why must you increase the price?

> Sometimes you just need the space and not the speed. Your computer already supports that. It's called "swap".

Yeah but DDR3 was faster then and still is now - I can't imagine my M4 Mac having a slightly older version RAM would meaningfully affect me, but another 24GB of it (or whatever I have) would certainly be an improvement. CPUs have L1, L2, L3+ caches too after all.

It probably would. LPDDR5 memory bandwidth on M-series Macs is several multiples of the memory bandwidth available on DDR3 (depending on the exact chip, Pro, Max, etc... 4x to beyond 10x.) The whole system would be much, much slower.

I’ve been pricing out my various options but the notion of replacing a 10 year old motherboard with another 10 year old motherboard is kinda lousy.

The PC I replaced when I bought this one was such a huge improvement.

My options basically boils down to fixing trash that’s falling apart or a sidegrade at best for the same price as what I bought a beast of a PC for 10 freaking years ago. Depressing.

Because if you take orders otherwise you won't be able to fulfill them.

>As the memory industry is still recovering from the challenging environment in 2023, this tight supply environment will help drive the considerable improvements in profitability and ROI (return on investment) that are needed to enable the investments required to support future growth. The alternative is they could charge more. They could. And people would pay it.

Paying more would not help you when there is no more supply. It is a zero sum game.

Maybe you could pay someone else who is less desperate to part with some, but that does not increase supply.

Nine women cannot produce a baby in a month, even though you could average about one per month if you wait about nine months.
