Am i the only one that is wary of connecting kimi to my desktop and filesystem. Very different beast than using its API via OpenRouter.
It's not only you, I am really curious about their data privacy.

Yup they have a cost advantage. They just need to be good enough and just copy. Sorry american labs - it’s the beginning of the end.
No American corporations with thousands of users will do business with foreign labs, so the American labs will remain on top.

I want to believe I work on something creative in this space (even though, the current UI was never "meant to be" and (d?)evolved from a substrate of cheaply available UI components and laziness). THen again, much of the unorthodoxy actually comes from all the small(and big) usability nightmares that I can not bring myself to tolerate while working in a desktop environment(so, created new ones - like bitmap-based context trees ;)

As soon as the K3 weights are published on July 27th, there will be many US providers hosting the model. I realize model hosting doesn't really apply to kimi work specifically, but in terms of accessing K3, there will be US options likely in 7 days. Just look at OpenRouter to see the providers hosting K2.6 https://openrouter.ai/moonshotai/kimi-k2.6 .
Yea, but those aren't subscriptions with fixed costs. I'm wary of running my dev flow against a pay-per-token endpoint, since costs can easily explode doing that.

There are no entities on earth I trust less than US corporations and the US government (well, Israel but you’d have to literally be suicidal to willing use Israeli tech). I’ll happily give China my data. As far as I’m concerned, they’ve proven themselves to be a force for good, or at least neutral.
As a US citizen I have domicile over the data and a legal system that has some claws. We tend to enforce and celebrate IP whereas China openly scoffs at its premise.
Frankly I don’t trust any of them. Certainly not Anthropic after they refused to delete my Cowork session. Certainly not OpenAI with their duplicity. I’m a Google workspace subscriber so I use Gemini, but only with logging disabled and for throwaway searches.
I will go at the pace that hardware I control lets me. That happens to be pretty damn slow ATM… waiting for 45 minutes for my 4090 to pp 30k tokens wasn’t much fun the other day, but it got the job done. If speed were a priority I’d propose be renting time on vast.ai or something.

This comment is a great example of how large and strange the skills gap in AI is right now. Curious why your first impulse is not simply to point your favorite agent at a few examples and start brainstorming/planning from there? Multiple times I’ve built a purpose specific bespoke tool starting this way. In fact, it’s a great way to learn how specialized tools are built.

Claude Code and codex take completely different approaches. The core loop of feeding generation and having a bash tool is entirely the same. If you want to start building your own thing I'm sure there is good setups out there to start from rather than going from zero.
Ofc I can just fork gemini-cli if I want my own version but like I don't think that's what OP meant by build your own thing and customize it.

Please explain where frontier models were copied from. Have LLMs always existed?
Did they invent everything that went into those LLms?

I highly recommend to anyone that uses them a lot - try to clone your own. I’ve got mine fully formed into how I want it, with features I haven’t seen anywhere else yet and with integration into everything I work with. We’ve lived in a world where every app had to fit enough people well enough - but now we live in a world where an app can be molded to be absolutely perfect for just you!
Most people don’t want to play product manager and just want to pay someone to make the decisions for them. We used to have a time where every small business had its own custom accounting software, and discovered that these businesses aren’t actually special snowflakes and are better off just using the generic software and conforming to whatever it does
The accounting is very similar. The processes are not. Small businesses continue to be special snowflakes in terms of how they do their work. Both for good and bad reasons.
I’m surprised an open source accounting package hasn’t popped up that handles the accounting well. The backend could largely be the same (or at least modular) while the front legitimately needs to vary based on what type of work, how sales are done, whether they hold inventory, local taxes, etc, etc.

Isn’t OpenCode just reselling Deepseek’s tokens over the same API? For v4-pro the prices from other providers on OpenRouter are way higher so what else could it be? Opencode Go already seems extremely unprofitable if people use up at least 30% of their monthly tokens so its hard to imagine they’d go with several times more expensive inference provider yet show Deepseek pricing on their page.
They may have a bespoke deal with someone. They may be losing money. They may have believed a claim from Deepseek about not storing things more than they should. It may be something else. AFAIK no third party audit has been done so all that we have is what they say.
