Indeed, if you don't like it you can buy another product. That should be Apple's choice. Sure, users will likely benefit from this but I don't see why the EU needs to regulate this.

Ppl like good hardware and sw support but want more freedom, why not allow this? I hope for a similar law for other systems like smartwatches, infotainment systems, etc

That's like saying that the EU is asking apple to allow iPhones to run android apps. That's not what's going on at all.

Some even display a pop up telling you to please go install Chrome if you want to use their B2B SaaS service your company just purchased.

To be fair, in some niche cases that’s the only thing that works. Complex WebAudio applications, for example.

As I mentioned in another comment: yep, that's just like they did on android, except no, they didn't, everything is on the app store. I'm not sure where people are getting these fantasies from.

Same here. Side loading will open the door to a whole new category of malware/adware/crapware. A good solution to apps wanting to track your every click is not organizational but technical. Just don't give them APIs for reliable cross-app tracking. That advertising ID? Same with not allowing fine-grain control of what apps are allowed to use your WiFi/connect to the internet. There's no reason or excuse its not a privacy setting that you can tightly-control and revoke.

Apparently that is a feature that iPhones sold in China do support. But only China for some reason.

Going from "meta/google will build their own app store" to "no 3rd parties are going to make their app store" is a long stretch.

On android there's f-droid, which is an open source version of the app store with lots of great apps.

I support forcing open standards on tech giants. But I don’t support singling out a specific tech giant (in this case Apple), since it means Apple’s also-tech-giant competitors get an upper hand.

For example, why not force Google to open up Chrome, to increase interoperability? I want to be able to export saved passwords from Chrome and import them into the macOS keychain, and vice versa.

If the EU focuses on Apple and forgets, say, Chrome, it might gain an even greater market share because Apple has to open up features while Google doesn’t have to open up Chrome.

Even the KaiOS support ended for WhatsApp. That’s not to say anyone should use that metadata-scraping, address-book-stealing service anyhow.

So you, as a person concerned with privacy, will not install non appstore version, easy peasy sr even better- not install fb at all. You keep your security, and ppl that want sideload will have what they want, everyone happy. And it's quite ironic that on Android the app works as usual, no crippled version
