I'm in a marriage and I struggle with this same question. I sometimes feel like the things my wife cares about are essentially endless. I don't understand the complaint here. It sounds like your wife is trying to get you, incrementally, to act like a responsible adult. This is what a good partner does.
The more interesting question is why you want to remain living like a slob in a messy environment?
