No democratic country is built to handle something like a pandemic. That much became clear the last two years. You need to be able to mandate strict laws that take away a lot of liberties that we have learn to consider as standard.

Many countries do currently mandate strict laws that take away a lot of liberties. Australia, Canada, Europe, parts of US. Are they still democracies?

Absolutely not, have you seen Fox News. Us over here in Australia are absolutely needing to be liberated by the US. I can't wait till the Marines roll in.

Its terrifying, over here in Brisbane, Queensland. We've had one locally acquired case from Covid in the last few months.

We're going to pubs, no masks, No Covid. But we're sorely missing our freedom. /s

>"[...] we totally hollowed out our health care" Weird move for one of the richest countries in the world, no?

Privatization of infrastructure in Germany has always led to a, at least perceived, decline in quality. This has been true for postal service, railway, telcos and now health care.

When was healthcare in Germany not private?

I had covid, but have no certificate with PCR test. I had positive home self test. I did not want to ride bus and visit hospital, with 38 degree fever, to get official PCR test. Instead I just self isolated for 2 weeks like an idiot. They will now force me to take a shot. I have to risk severe alergic reaction. I am also vaccinated, but Jansen does not count anymore.

Sorry to hear that, but you may overestimate your own risk: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/34463744/ At this point, we're talking about the most-tested vaccine in all of the world. Even if your chance of dying is increased by 5x, that's equivalent to about 10 hours of driving a car at average Autobahn speeds. If you're prepared to take that kind of risk every year, I'd invite you to just go do it.

Good you have better information than my GP!

Edit: allergic reaction would be from high level of antibodies. I recently passed hard form of covid.

Please stop giving medical advices! You are not doctor and you did not even read my post!

Realistically: 1) Mandatory vaccination, all age groups, boosters etc. AND 2) permanently reconfiguring our society to reduce social contacts such that with the vaccines, COVID is suppressed. If the vaccines work well, then small (maybe no) changes will be needed. If they don't, then large changes. WFH, no indoor hospitality etc. We can cycle through lockdowns, we can wring our hands about vaccinating children, we ca…

> 1) Mandatory vaccination, all age groups, boosters etc. 50% to 60% of all the people in ICU with covid related symptoms in the EU atm are fully vaccinated. It's been lies from day one: "masks do not protect" then "masks are mandatory because they protect" (I don't know which one is correct but at least one is a lie), "you're a conspiracy theorist if you think there's any link between a virus research lab in Wuhan a…

That's a statistical effect: far more people are vaccinated than not, so they are more likely to show up in the ECU even if the vaccine reduces their infection rate.

I find it ironic that there are plenty comments that paint the picture of how mandatory vaccinations divide the country. Hello? Have you been awake for the last month? How much more divided can a country already be when the absolute democratic majority has made their decision months ago to take the shot but 30% are holding everyone back. Anyone in my family or from my friends that has taken one for the team (and got…

One of the most salient thing about rights is that the majority isn't permitted take them away whenever it suits them.

Well, there's always civil war. That'd be a bit more divided. We should probably try going in the opposite direction, which usually involves less trying to impose our wills on each other.

I agree that everybody should get vaccinated. Let's make this virus extinct. But what you describe is majoritarianism. It is a form of democracy but a very weak form. For a lot of people, who are from minority groups, it is indistinguishable from totalitarianism. Why do 30% of people refuse to get vaccinated? (here in Aotearoa it is 5%). Something is happening, people are getting left behind, in vast numbers. Forcing…

It's an interesting question and there is lots of debate in Germany at the moment as to why. Some factors are:

* Germany did very well during the pandemic so people didn't experience a Bergamo or Madrid moment

* Germany has a strong esoteric / anthroposophical movement (Steiner, Waldorf et al.)

* Federalism: Vaccination rates vary a lot by state

As a foreigner living in Germany I could live with it if there were otherwise sound measures, but it's mostly been a bunch of wishful thinking. There was a rush last summer to open everything up despite it being relatively clear it was way too early and a lot of people really understood it as "corona is over". Even this I could understand, but this year they do the same thing again! Surprise, surprise that there is a…

"open everything up despite it being relatively clear it was way too early" It probably wasn't. There have been 2 major studies on the effects of covid-lockdown measures, they show a small increase in total mortality. So we should have done as the Swedes and kept everything open from beginning to end.

No, we should have strived to get everyone vaccinated (by making it mandatory) and then this pandemic would be over in Europe.

"Opening up" would have killed more people than it killed in the UK.

The people driving this wave, who are getting seriously ill and dying are the unvaccinated.

In Denmark we have now reached 90% vaccination rate. We have more infected, the same number of admissions in hospital and a 15% higher death rate than all of 2020. I really fail to see why we are blaming the unvaccinated and not Pfizer/Moderna.

None of this is true. The vaccination rate in Denmark is 77%, not 90% [1]. The number of hospital admissions and the death rate are lower than during the first and second waves [2, 3] despite a significantly larger infection rate [4]. I fully disagree; this matter is not a question of an opinion. There is absolutely not a single convincing reason why shots should not be mandatory. If people like you will join the riot against it, I will join the riots against the rioters. We finally need Ordnung in society and it cannot be that opinionated people "iT sHoUlD bE nOt MaNdAtOrY bUt I aM PrO VaX, iT iS bEcAuSe oF tHe GrUndGeSeTz" or uneducated should d…

> I fully disagree; this matter is not a question of an opinion. There is absolutely not a single convincing reason why shots should not be mandatory. Isn't the the reason of "someone doesn't want it" enough?

Is "I don't wanna" ever a good reason to threaten safety and health of others?

What if I don't want smoking ban in public places? What if I don't want speed limit on public road or giving right of way? What if run a restaurant and don't want food safety laws?
