Are computers better than the best human drivers in all circumstances? No, maybe they never will be, but that doesn't matter. Are they better than average humans in average conditions already? Yes. They don't need to be all powerful AGI which can replace humans in all circumstances to be useful and save lives.

What doesn't matter is who wins in average conditions. Because averages are just that: averages. But actual driving is full of non-average situations, whether they are created by weather, other human participants in traffic, animals, whatever...there's millions of surprising non-standard situations happening each day in traffic, and current technology isn't even able to reliably detect when it's facing such a situation, much less capable of handling them entirely on its own.

The dancing cars were fixed several months ago in an update. The computer used to just recognize cars, and then align them according to the lanes it sees. At a stoplight it when it had trouble seeing the lanes clearly the cars would rapidly change orientation. Since they updated the neural net to also recognize the vehicle orientations the dancing has stopped. I have seen a lane change cancel recently, a couple weeks…

Agreed, with HW3 it's the same, there's still lots of jitter and dancing cars. As of today, with software updated about three days ago.

All signs point to driving requiring an understanding of what's going on around you, which this generation of ML does not provide. The problem is that all these so-called "self-driving" systems expect you to be alert and ready because at any moment they might decide that the human needs to be in control again.

What was with the "STOP" at the top of the screen blinking randomly even when the car wasn't at a stop nor at a place where it should stop? This doesn't really inspire too much confidence, IMO. It makes me think their FSD efforts are on par with their autopilot implementation.

It looks like that just shows up any time a stop sign is anywhere in view of that camera, not that it's actively stopping.

It's not apples to oranges. If a human interferes then a human is now driving. That human has a worse record of non accidents than the computer. Ergo, that human is making the driving record worse not better.

Most of what is happening on that video appears to be a human controlling the vehicle, the overlay is just what the computer sees. In current public releases autopilot only warns you that it thinks you are going to run a red light / stop sign. And it is up for the human driver to actually stop. So, unless its on some beta release it was probably a human that rolled through it.

I was in a Honda Stepwagn last week and that one recognised stop signs and clearly displayed it.

Are computers better than the best human drivers in all circumstances? No, maybe they never will be, but that doesn't matter. Are they better than average humans in average conditions already? Yes. As someone who works in insurance, I can tell you that the vast majority of accidents occur in adverse conditions.

Creating an AI that only functions on dry sunny days is basically useless from a safety perspective.

...though it does save people time since they can be doing something else while in transit!

Don't fear monger.

"Teslas" do not "run into the backs of car carriers".

I don't know where you are repeating that from, because you've clearly never driven one, but the core concept of autopilot is that the human should step in whenever a situation is confusing and/or dangerous. If the car does not recognize a situation it will always alert the driver to take over.

Would you accept a higher risk of accident for you and your children, if it meant that an order of magnitude more other bad drivers would be saved?

Also keep in mind the outrage factor. The reason airplane crashes are so feared is because of the loss of control. Meanwhile alcohol and cars are much more dangerous but much lower outrage because you still feel like you have some control.
