As long as there's a steering wheel, and I believe there will be one for a pretty long time, you are still the one responsible to make sure theses things doesn't happen But that totally defeats the purpose of autopilot...
Of a true autopilot, sure, but for now they all are pretty far from being one. For now it's only purpose is to have to make less effort while driving.
