No you don't; it's often overkill to use the SOTA models. People want SOTA because it's shiny, but there are a lot of tasks where it's cheaper and more efficient to use other models.

Experience, mostly, and bit of trial-and-error. For code I use SOTA, but for e.g. translations I use Gemini 3.5 flash, for some other use-cases I use Gemma 4.

Fable 5 is switching into Opus 4.8 for everything I throw at it. It is not worth it Opus 4.8 is good enough for the next couple months. For $17/mo for pro anthropic is still worth it for claude code etc.

I hope that their marketing and developer relations teams were already off yesterday, and that they will have better news for us today. OpenAI is doing a much better job on this, offering generous usage limits to users at home. They also hand out usage resets for minor issues, that you can even apply at a time of your choosing.

5.6 isn't available to subscribers at all. "Better" on the optics front because they didn't tease users, but they're not better for subscribers regarding latest model access.

Because Dario is an ASI doomer and deeply fears the power and danger of hyperintelligent AI and it'd be extremely irresponsible to not warn people "hey, this thing can do things the past models couldn't, and the future models may do it even better".

The thing the overlords are forgetting is they need customers and users.

You are right that the temptation to use the asymmetric advantage AI gives will be intense. But banks felt that temptation in 2008 in with cheap capital and 40x leverage. Some banks resisted. Which ones do you think survived in 2010? Business and technology moves in cycles. Optimize for longevity and let your competitors go out of business

It is expected to release next week, and the reason it has not been widely rolled out yet is the US administration, as far as I know.
