Making better software than my competitors and keeping my business afloat is my goal. I use whatever better tool gives me the edge.

I focus on doing better work for the most part. But there is also stuff I do now, because the SOTA models can handle it, that I would otherwise just wouldn't do.

By "the race" I mean "the frontier, and the race to superintelligence." They are categorically behind. The best they can do with the capacity they have is to distill US models, but that doesn't enable them to reach the scale needed to leapfrog the US in the race to superintelligence.

I don't think we have any evidence that LLMs will lead to superintelligence. And even if they do, being first in no way locks out the party that gets there second or third.

Red hat did it for Linux. Someone needs to do the same for AI. Make money on the implementation and maintenance not the api tokens. Tech companies have gotten fat and Happy on recurring revenue. I think the problem is whether you're for or against local models, the training strategies etc are roughly the same.

I agree a lot of people are saying this and doing this but this won't last long. People do not want to suffer or fall behind their peers. At some point not using AI for anything will not be a feasible option. Unless you operate from an incredibly uncommon and privileged financial position, you don't really even have a choice.

We have no idea what GPT 5.6 is going to be. And 5.5 still ranks higher than Opus 4.8.

we’ve got the benchmark graphs from the announcement, and i hear tepid opinions from people with gpt 5.6 access. fable is far ahead of gpt 5.5 (my prev daily driver) also. much less passive aggressive / overly defensive.

It is. But cash expenditures can be modeled in the business economics. But depending on an unrelated party for a core capability is an existential threat. Imagine if every single computer your business runs on could be bricked without notice or a fallback. You’d go bankrupt within a day. That’s the signal this fiasco has sent. That being said, I am working on a federated / coop model that will allow smaller companies…

The concern would be the ever increasing cost of GPUs. I imagine to help mitigate the risk, having a setup where more GPU's can be added on, and the old ones can still be used (as new ones get added on) would make the endeavor more palatable. Vs. having to swap out old GPUs for new ones, because the money spent on the old ones is lost (or at least some of it is lost if you can find a way to resell them).

I'm not subscribed to either right now, but have always preferred the GPT "personality." It does what I tell it to, not what it imagines. With Claude I was constantly jamming the escape key -- "STOP THAT".
