If M1 chips have better performance per watt, then they are going to put off less heat. So however "practically fanless" the x86-64 chip you choose is, the M1 is going to be more fanless.

And for a laptop chip those are pretty much the two things that matter (not melting your lap and not being crazy loud).

Right but GP's main points were: - noticeable faster in just everything - literally 2 times faster [compiling code] Neither of these statements is true when comparing against the latest generation, which is the relevant comparison. The power thing is true, but irrelevant to GP's point and my objection to it.

I was comparing 2 computers I have (read the comment I replied to). But if you are saying that passively cooled Apple notebook should be compared to last-gen Intel desktop CPU with powerful cooler - Apple enginers would be honored to read it ;)

The tradeoff I'm making is money vs capability. My argument is that most people don't need the capabilities offered by brand new, top of the line models. A used laptop that is a couple of years old is, I think, the best choice for most people.

A new M1 laptop is likely to last 4-5 years as a good specification of machine. A second hand laptop has much less advantage to doing that. You're missing out on the fact that Apple didn't release a 12980hk or 5980hx competitor. These are 30 watt chips that trounce the competition's 65 watt (e.g. the 12980hk and 5980hx) and beyond chips. You are vastly, vastly overestimating how many people like apple laptops. They're expensive, the OS is worse, and there's no speed difference outside of benchmarks. That combined with the fact that most apps are windows-based, and the games are poorly emulated or nonexistent, there's really no reason to buy an apple laptop short of bragging.

That seems like a simplistic view, and honestly, I'd figure you don't value much what the Mac delivers for me, mostly aesthetic and lack of tinkering. For instance, this Mac has a nice, large trackpad, and even high end laptops from other manufacturers tend to feel a bit clunky by comparison. I don't like fan noise, and the Air performs well for a fanless machine. With a Dell laptop, I still had problems with audio drivers and bluetooth devices--I just don't want to mess with that crap, at all, ever, and even from the manufacturer, I'm dealing with driver issues and bad configuration. I don't want the ability to de-crapify my PC with a fresh install of Windows, I want to open the box and not have an OS loaded with 3rd party crap, and that's not something you get with a PC.

I could probably go on for a while if I thought about it, but I don't even consider an Apple laptop anything to brag about. Generally, I'm tech savvy, but so far over it that I want an appliance machine. I find visible logos, products, and brand identities tacky, so bragging doesn't even enter into the equation. Visible Apple logo counts against the machine for me.

Well Apple compared themself to a 3080m which is faster than a 1080ti.

Apple compared the M1 Max to a 3080m. 4x the GPU cores and up to 8x the memory makes a difference, and it wouldn't be at all surprising to see that their numbers are accurate.

My colleague has an M1 Mac. I have a Ubuntu desktop. My colleague always asks me to transcode videos on my machine because on her MacBook it is too slow.

I finally managed to get nvenc working on handbrake and the stupendous frame rate jump actually had me sit in stunned silence, from 3-15FPS to 120FPS on drone 1080p60 footage was jaw dropping. I know the m1 claims to be fast but I'm transcoding on a GPU that's from like 2015!

Newer Macs have hardware accelerated transcode with Handbrake as well.

Battery life is more about idle/low load TDP, not full load TDP. It's not like MBP has 60*20=1200 Wh battery (100Wh is FAA limit)

Yes, and the M1 is consuming less power at low loads, enabling longer battery lives. What other explanation do you think there could be for the long battery lives of the M1 laptops?

Hipster graphic designers make upwards of 150,000 a year in my area. The professional in pro, never actually meant “software engineer”. It meant anyone who can hang up their signboard and work on their own: lawyers, doctors, architects, and yes… graphic designers.

Personally, I think software engineers don’t need fast laptops either. We need mainframes and fast local networks. Nothing beats compiling at the speed of 192 cores at once.

Which reminds me, laptops and render farms is exactly the technique those hipster graphic designers you talked about are using so they aren’t missing out on any power.
