I don't know anything about the immediate situation here but calling GitHub "infrastructure" is not accurate. I know every man and his dog hosts their repos there but GitHub is a private company (owned by Microsoft!) and is not obliged to host things that it thinks will make it look bad.

Private companies can be treated as infrastructure, and of course private companies are free to operate in a way that reduces faith in their reliability.

Circumstantial evidence is real evidence. People get convicted over it regularly. People in the Jim Crow era were convicted without evidence, or had exonerating evidence hidden by racist law enforcement and prosecutors. It’s hardly the same.

It's almost as if that everything that I have said about why you should not host on GitHub or go all in on their services is essentially self revealing.

From the repeated unreliability of GitHub and GitHub actions [0], how "private" repositories are not private [1] and now sloppy account bans like this one is more of an indication about why self-hosting makes more sense and my comment going against 'centralizing everything' has aged perfectly and still applies today. [2]

If hobby projects like RedoxOS [3] can outright move off of GitHub and on to a self-hosted GitLab, so can you. It seems they were smart enough to move off of GitHub during the Microsoft takeover and avoid the carnage that they have brought on to the site.

This is a win. Good on Github. I was about to hound Nat to swing around a bat at his former stomping grounds. EDIT: Stripped some commentary about 4chan. I try to avoid editing like this, but the ban was for an entirely different reason, so it was needlessly provocative.

Nat left GitHub back in Nov 2021.

Man, can’t believe it’s already been over a year. Yeah, I know it would’ve been a long shot, but he’d know who to raise the issue with. He also cares deeply about developers in general, and especially about setting good examples — he once joked to me “If you were at Microsoft during the YouTube-dl ban, you wouldn’t think I was so nice. You’d be like wow, Nat swears at people.” I would’ve been too!

Its back. According to AUTO on Discord the cause was due to some link or instructions on how to use NSFW embeddings and models which was removed. You people obsessing over a single letter on a CSV file need to seriously calm down and re-evaluate your sensibilities.

I sorta do this; I have a small collection of historical programming languages texts that I make available to my students and anyone else interested. It’s not really a membership kind of thing tho.

Agreed!

If, however, all the other drives were named "Photos" and "Recipes" and other descriptive terms, leaving only the C drive as a letter, that'd be interesting. Even more interesting if it's a bunch of photos of white people, and nothing much else on said C drive. If that same person had previously criticized civil rights issues, and was cagey about why they have the one oddly-named drive (https://www.reddit.com/r/StableDiffusion/comments/xl8bj2/com...), and had a history of putting out racially-focused mods for a game, we might begin to get outright suspicious.

This is what circumstantial evidence is all about; more than one data point leading to a reasonable conclusion. You seem to want to redefine it to a single data point, which giving it's been explained several times now, I have to assume (circumstantial again!) is playing dumb intentionally.

Turns out the TOS violation had nothing whatsoever to do with racism, as so many commenters here were overly confident to proclaim, in typical HN style. It's because he'd linked to prohibited content in the wiki:
