> They would lose all of TSMC if they do any military actions. How is that? Is there an action movie style self destruct sequence?

A few employees with sledge hammers would be enough. These are rather delicate machines.

To render inoperable sure, but invaders would surely be able to suss out some of their secrets from the remains.

The CEO of Ford directly said if Chinese EVs are allowed into the US it will be the end of US auto manufacturing. They know they are inferior, and choose not to compete, just lobby for more regulations to keep competitors out. Free market, haha.

Well, what do you expect him to say? Consider the audience.

It would be great if he said “we have to up our game and build better vehicles that are less expensive.”

But it’s so much easier to just lobby the competition away so there is none. It’s the American way!

As a resident of Taiwan, would you say the average person there is comfortable obeying a strong central government, whoever that currently is? As an American, I found the deference to authority very strange.

> As an American, I found the deference to authority very strange. Are schoolchildren in the US still required to recite the pledge of allegiance...?

Required, no.

Strongly pressured, yes.

I can feel the scores of messages being sent to the federal government from lobbyists saying what a threat Chinese hardware is to national security.

> I can feel the scores of messages being sent to the federal government from lobbyists saying what a threat Chinese hardware is to national security. The motivation for such messages may be greedy, but it doesn't mean the facts aren't wrong: 1. As a practical matter, no one can audit systems so thoroughly to determine a system built by an adversary won't act adversarially. 2. Free market incentives work counter to n…

But Meta can share with NSA what kind of porn are you into or that you've said few bad words about US president, whilst CCP doesn't care, so who is a real adversary?! By the way I am an INDIVIDUAL, my personal FREEDOM and FEELINGS are all that matter. China didn't hurt my feelings, domestic companies or politicians did, so, again, who's a real adversary now, huh?!

If China has technological superiority to the US in every facet of science and engineering, is that really good for us though?

Who is "us"?

I guess US and European societies.

Not good for us if it gets banned domestically because the US can't compete in a free market.

Free market was a tool, yet for you it is a venerated idol.

My bet would be that invasion wouldn't look like quick war, but slow control of political power either through light force like economic blackmail, or through something similar to what US did with Venezuela. Now that US has already opened the gate to labelling nation head as drug seller, this just eases things for China.

Any country that competently adopts Ukrainian drone technology cannot effectively be invaded currently. And that's for a continental invasion. Taiwan? All surface ships are sitting ducks. Troop transport ships would get absolutely decimated, and then the landing troops would get swarmed by drones all over again, and then they have to maintain logistics to the small minority that land (good luck with that). And that's…

That's why I said it will be slow. I think it will be decades long political control, not a military invasion.

China have more credible threat of bombing economically relevant building like TSMC, or capturing leaders and protestors like they already are doing in Hong Kong.

The GPU performance is insane too, approaches M5 results at ~20W. Of course it will be in Android phones so it will be throttle hard past 4W and will have terrible drivers. I wish phones moved to HPB packaging and active cooling so we could have sustained 10W and use them as light workstations.

I’m not sure I follow why the performance is “Insane”

This is a M5 level chip that runs slightly within a ballpark of M5 wattage (afaik M5 is between 15W max on an iPad and 30W max CPU+GPU on a cooled Mac)

This is running in a thermally unconstrained bench setup and has potentially worse power consumption with what will be lower than previous gen performance when this and the alleged M6 are truly out.

didn't intel discontinue heterogeneous (laptop?) chips recently

Only server, as far as I know. Server is now either high-density E core (Sierra Forest) or low-density P core (Granite Rapids), but desktop and laptop are heterogeneous still; laptops are getting even more heterogeneous because they have P-Cores, E-cores, and Low Power Island cores.

Did Intel ever ship any heterogeneous server parts? I'm not aware of any, and it looks like even the Raptor Lake desktop silicon sold under the Xeon brand only had P-cores enabled.

The worst of Intel's processor core asymmetry was with Meteor Lake and Arrow Lake, where the two LP-E cores on the IO die had no L3 cache and really bad DRAM latency despite being directly adjacent to the DRAM controller, resulting in those two cores combined offering about as much performance as one of the E-cores on the CPU chiplet. And they used the same IO die across both generations, while updating the microarchitecture of the CPU chiplet, so things diverged even more. And because the performance of the LP-E cores was so bad, Windows wouldn't schedule any threads on them unless it was trying to operate exclusively on those LP-E cores with the CPU chiplet powered down entirely—but those two LP-E cores were still reported to software in the total thread count, so heavy multithreaded applications would launch two more threads than could actually be scheduled at once.

With Panther Lake, Intel still has three tiers of CPU cores, but the performance gap between E cores and LP-E cores is down to only about 10%.

"matches" could've also been written as "this year's product falls short of the competitor's last year one". And multithreaded is 10 cores vs 6 cores. I appreciate Apple being kept on their feet, but they're not dethroned yet.

that's precisely what the post says under the title.
