It's in the subheading: > “Based on simple math, these outbreak responses—which require rapid, timely responses—are going to be greatly diminished,” the former CDC lab director tells WIRED.

You think an agency with less people can more capably do its job? Come on now.

Yes! I have no idea if that is the case here, but absolutely yes.

DOGE will be seen by historians as the cause of so many crisis…

DOGE is simply a tool of global capital, and shouldn't be singled out as the root cause of anything. Its purpose was to cut money from being redistributed through government programs, so it could go to the financial markets instead via tax cuts for the wealthiests and inefficient defense contracts. It achieved its goal wonderfully.

More than that it was an enabling tool.

Republicans for decades have claimed that the government cant do anythingright/good and that we must deregulate and let the free market do everything.

Problem is the government is actually pretty good at doing somethings, so Republicans break things until they can use them as examples of government inefficiency then privatize it for there own profit.

Doge was made to break the government so Republicans could point at what was left and say "see government is broken"

But Musk ran it and he's and idiot that had no idea what he doing so istead of it slowly all going to shit so no one would remember it all working as intended it started to fall apart to soon. So we still have people that will point to the real cause.

Seems like more bureaucracy that would make it even harder for new restaurants to get set up and the paperwork they would have to maintain in order to provide that information.

How hard would it be for them to know their immediate supplier?

Just throw it on the pile of 1000 other things that a small business has to keep up with with minimal resources and small margins when all they really absolutely need to adhere to is hygiene. Everything else is a nice to have and shouldn’t be a requirement.

If we can't figure out a way as a society to honestly tell people what food is being sold in restaurants, maybe we shouldn't be starting new restaurants until we figure that out.

Look, you want to encourage new businesses at all times and reduce barrier to entry as much as possible. Regulation should only touch things that are absolutely necessary which in the case of the food industry is hygiene and sanitation. That’s it. Everything else is nice to have. What’s necessary for every industry varies and you need to have solid heads in charge of this so you’re balancing the ease of starting a business and consumer rights at the same time.

No one has actually managed to show that this team that was involved actually had responsibilities that would have prevented this incident which is literally what I asked. But go “dunk” on someone on the internet for political team clout, you’re definitely making the world a better place.

The only people in a position to show this are the idiots responsible for the current broken system. Deep analysis will have to come after regime change

Except no one died because Twitter malfunctions here and there.

TBF the companies that failed to contain the disease are at fault, not the agency. You can't reasonably expect government to protect everyone from everything.

Only in some libertarian fever dream.

Functional societies has central functions to ensure that safety of its people.

Yes. Using forced prison labor is using slave labor.

Are the prisoners given no choice? I’m okay with it either way - as long as prison time isn’t unjust.

I recommend _The Alabama Solution_ [0]. It goes into good detail how unjust the system is with for-profit prisons.

Why let people out of jail when you can pay them pennies on the dollar and make millions of their forced labor? People are denied parole so prisons don't lose their labor. These prisons have no problem starving their prisoners when they strike to get them back out making money for their owners.

Slave still exists in the USA. I hope for the day it no longer does.

It’s much more polluting (why wrap salad in a plastic bag?), promotes bacteria growth (and disease like in the present case), and further removes us from food in its original form. Of course you’re to spend your money however you see fit, that’s not the issue.

The salad is wrapped in a plastic bag because it is useful. People exist, and some of us are gross. For instance: We don't wash our hands often enough, or properly-enough. We sneeze all over everything wherever we go. We could get rid of the modern marvel of plastic bags, or get rid of the people instead. (I'm not a big fan of eugenics.) Maybe I'd grow it myself and avoid all packaging and distribution problems, but…

Or people could just buy unwrapped lettuce. No one is asking anyone to quit lettuce altogether.

Not really. Lettuce has virtually zero nutritional value.

Which is a benefit in itself, it adds texture and is inoffensively flavoured (hell on the right day or if I haven't drank enough water yet it can taste great). All without adding many calories to the meal. It's also a much cheaper alternative than ozempic for those of us who don't have the consistent willpower to not treat ourselves to more food when we're hungry even if we know we have all the calories we need.

You will never lose weight by eating more calories. If you're going to consume extra calories, there are much more nutritious things than lettuce.
