At least with scientific articles, the authors get precisely zero of the money that people pay for them. As for publishers, why should they be getting billions of dollars for putting up a PDF file on a website?
If they want to hold out for some big (or even small) payout, they have every right to do so. But they don't. Why? Because it's the best deal available for the scientists. The journal publishers actually do something. And if you think you can do it for much less, I hope you will step forward and help humanity.

The price for that storage system will be far more dominated by drive prices than by the cost of the NAS box itself. Drive prices have approximately doubled in my area vs. 2 years ago.
