How many people did the US kill in Iraq and Afghanistan in the last 25 years?

Way more than AI did. Another point to AI.

AI is wielded by the same actor as in Iraq and Afghanistan.

keep taking away the choice, force an upheaval of society, rework major social paradigm, all without asking and thinly veiling the mandate of forced adoption with a "this will make it all easier".

trying to disrupt peoples lives while making them pay for it and taking profit is not marketing, or shrewd business, it is an assault on an established society.

i cant square all the blame on the more reactionary persons, that are behaving in the way that tech knows they will behave, tech knows how to push behavioural buttons to induce engagement, has little care over the intent of that engagement, until now.

BTW, all FAANGS executives, try not to stomp on any more burning paper bags left at your front door, and please stop eating dirt.

The sole reason the concept of "physical violence" exists is because violence without that qualifier is not necessarily physical, but still violence.

[flagged]

Not to appeal to authority, but because I think it's useful, here's how the WHO defines it according to Wikipedia:

> the intentional use of physical force or power, threatened or actual, against oneself, another person, or against a group or community, which either results in or has a high likelihood of resulting in injury, death, psychological harm, maldevelopment, or deprivation

Note words such as "power", "psychological harm" "maldevelopment" "deprivation".

So, imagine that some humans make this choice and then AI autonomously takes over and humans can't stop it anymore. Is that enough to treat AI in such a situation as a magical alien something that can threaten your or my survival? One thing that the whole AI debate has shown to me is how many people completely lack any sort of imagation.

My point is that wild imaginations about the current state of LLMs is the problem, we wouldn't even consider connecting a random number generator or a statistical model to a weapons system but if we start thinking of it as an intelligence some actually would be tempted to do so.

I'm sorry, but do you realize it's 2026, not 1980s anymore? Whatever you call intelligence, if LLMs don't pass your "intelligence test", there is a lot of people who won't pass it either.

And I'm pretty sure that there is plenty of countries who would make soldiers out of those people and give them weapons.

History has shown that an alien invasion can only happen because of the internal competition and in-fighting of the natives. Colonial empires proved it only a few centuries back. The invading alien powers are fuelled by the inviting natives. AI (and computing technology in general) is an alien as it defies all wordly norms. It can have exact identical copies, can replicate, can exist everywhere, communicate across hu…

I get the point of your metaphor but its missing the forest for the trees

Crime isn't a simple cause and effect relationship just because you say it is. For example, in the US, bomb threats were very common in the early 70's and then they stopped and nobody really knows why.

These two things don't have a whole lot to do with each other. Sure, crime isn't 'simple cause and effect'. But it is still as simple as 'means, motive, opportunity' and if means are plentiful that reduces the friction on the way to crime. As for the bomb threats, I have no idea, but I also don't see them as the kind of crime that we are discussion here (violence, in particular). Bomb threats are a denial of service…

"Means, motive, opportunity" is a helpful framework, but that doesn't make violence predictable. For example, there are many religions and ideologies that people can latch onto and which crazies get motivated by what ideology doesn't seem all that predictable? It could come from any political point of view or be based on something obscure.

Humans have been successfully using violence for conflict-resolution for tens of thousands of years. We’ll be fine, it’s not our first rodeo.

Violence against economic shifts from labor to capital have pretty much consistently failed though. At best they’ve won brief relief that eventually got swallowed by the invisible mouth. You can’t really fight this stuff because of global competition.

Average quality of life for a society almost never goes down long term because when it does the government gets violently overthrown.

Then who pays for it?

That is the question society is currently asking with articles like this one. Given that (allegedly) "your salary" won't be the answer for a significant chunk of the population soon, and all that money will instead (allegedly) go to the bosses doing the firings, and the AI companies they employ instead.

We get a view of this taken to its logical extreme in the final Resident Evil film featuring Milla Jovovich.

The entire Earth's population dead, with evil corporate board members holding votes underground as to who gets to be the CEO of the company.

Who is going to lobby to make it illegal? Our system is broken and won’t fix itself. Inequality is going to continue to increase until society collapses. If we want a better world we need to prepare for this eventuality by building avenues of popular action to return power to the people. Once the oligarchs have fucked up enough people’s lives, popular action becomes a realistic way out of this mess.

Legislators elected for that policy, I suppose.

Friend, they choose our legislators. They control the political process. They own the mass media and the social media companies. Denial isn’t a strategy.
