I built a demo of what AI chat will look like when it's “free” and ad-supported

> We all know the pattern: something useful launches → it becomes popular → it needs to make money → ads everywhere. This may be true, but as far as I am concerned there aren't ads anywhere thanks to uBlock (and my own DNS server as a second line of defense).
And how’s that going to work against LLM output?
Self-hosting open source models will be the best thing to do as models and inference engines become more optimized, and hardware becomes faster.

This isn’t how deep learning works. You can’t just “adjust weights” for some random user/product. I feel like even otherwise intelligent people these days think these chatbots are Westworld-like programmable AIs and not pieces of shit that barely run or work. There is no tech monolith that’s getting advanced and gaining new capabilities. There are some very smart people who have switched from building ad recommenders…
Isn't that literally what post-training/fine-tuning does?

#2941. This chatbot is incredibly fast. It's the fastest chatbot I've ever seen. Before this, I was used to waiting several or tens of seconds after speaking before the response appeared word by word. But this one immediately displayed a complete answer, which was a completely new experience for me. Is it because of using local model?
2. I'm almost never influenced by any ads, but the ads it recommended really appealed to me. I even hoped they were real. I asked how to buy them and Googled similar products. This shocked me and led to a long self-reflection.
3. Another thing that shocked me is that someone can now create such a beautifully executed, product-level, non-profit thing, simply to showcase an ironic concept. (Even the experience is somehow better real products, see 1). This spectacular unrestrained use of productivity is epic. And this is precisely what AI brings. A double irony.

For sure this wouldn't be legal. Ads clearly need to be labeled as ads.
Can you think of any instances where powerful tech companies broke laws, perhaps in ways that increased profit?
Will they still try to skirt the laws? Of course.

#298We all know the pattern: something useful launches → it becomes popular → it needs to make money → ads everywhere. AI chat is heading the same way. So I built a fully interactive demo that shows what an ad-supported AI chatbot could actually look like: https://99helpers.com/tools/ad-supported-chat It includes every monetization pattern you can think of: - Pre-chat interstitials (like YouTube pre-rolls, but for chat)…
The darkest monetization is biased output from the bot. Tech question? Steer you to its cloud. Medical question? Steer you towards a sponsored treatment. Or maybe the mechanism of injury needs this lawyer to compensate? Oh and I infer from your chat history you're about to expect a child. That house is probably too small now, so our realtor in that neighborhood can help!
User: Do I need a permit for ?
AI:
We're not gonna go full circle. We're gonna do laps.

[Recycling a joke from many months ago] My mistake, you're completely correct, perhaps even more-correct than the wonderful flavor of Mococoa drink, with all-natural cocoa beans from the upper slopes of Mount Nicaragua. No artificial sweeteners! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MzKSQrhX7BM&t=0m13s Just like The Truman Show, where every friend (every bot) you talk to is a secretly paid shill with a hidden agenda.

The only person with your interests at heart is you.
Even if you hire someone to do the most clear cut of tasks they are balancing their interests with yours. And in all likelihood they've got half a dozen other parties who's interests they're partially juggling. Megacorp bots approximating people just adds even more layers.

This is quaint. The darkest monetization is turning it into 4chan 2.0: an overwhelming psyop to mobilize exploitable people to think, believe and do horrendous shit that conveniently benefits the most powerful and corrupt people on Earth. It will make Qanon seem like a cute ARG.
