That's not past the suburbs , that's a ridiculous outlier. Congratulations, you live somewhere without paved roads, which puts you at what, 0.00001% of all Americans? That's your argument?

Thank you for proving my point. 35% of all roads in America are unpaved: https://highways.dot.gov/safety/other/unpaved-roads-safety-n... Vermont, New Mexico and Colorado notably all have more than 70% of their road network unpaved. 80% of all tribal land roads are unpaved.

And now lets overlay the number of trucks vs population. Note where most of the total number of pickup trucks (not per capita--flat out total) are.

Hint: most of the trucks are NOT in the rural areas due to the fact that the rural areas, by definition, do not have that much population. Also, rural areas tend to have old beater cars because gas prices are an issue and pickup trucks generally get quite a bit worse gas mileage than a basic sedan.

The problem is that the vast majority of pickup trucks are, in fact, being sold in the suburbs which don't have any of the problems with having to go off of a road.

Have you seen the prices of pre-owned Honda/Toyota sedans that are less than 5 years old? There are absolutely cars out there where trading in your new car after 3-4 years can make sense depending on the cost of the car, the depreciation curve, and whether you want to always be driving a relatively new car. Of course it's almost always going to be a better value proposition to drive the car for 10 years if you can, b…

The math doesn't work when you calculate the same thing based on buying low mileage used cars or leases. You're throwing large amounts of equity away every 4 years. Also electric cars get killed on the depreciation curve.

    > Also electric cars get killed on the depreciation curve.
I have heard this a couple of times now, and I believe it. Is the cause battery wear or pure demand (buyers don't want used EVs for various non technical reasons)?

90% of F-150s are daily driver grocery-getters. That was the target for the Lightning, not truck stuff.

I live in an area that has probably >100% pick-up ownership per adult male. I've noticed that these people will not go to the grocery store on days when the weather is inclement due to the chance of the groceries getting wet. Seems like a bad vehicle for grocery runs.

I just see people put the groceries in the passenger or back seats. They do it when it's sunny too.

Landscapers have trucks here too, but they look like this https://iveco.dk/shopping-varktojer/kampagner/MY24-IVECO-Dai... For personal use, like you mention, people use a small trailer. You own one or borrow it freely from many places, hitch it to your car, haul dirt, and then detach it. No need to drive a truck everywhere because you need to haul some stuff once a month. > But this idea that no normal person needs a…

You borrow it freely in places where you don’t need it. In rural areas they aren’t available. And getting a trailer and towing it is t as convenient as just driving a truck.

Sure, trucks make sense on farms and elsewhere with bad roads. The issue in the US is that people use them in the city.

BMW i3 is a true EREV and I absolutely love it. Always drives like an electric, but can pound highway miles on gas. Best of both worlds. I hope to never go back to pure one or the other, until battery and/or charging tech leaps forward a ton.

How fast can you go on the highway running the REx?

The REx hold up for about 60-65mph on flat ground without climate control. Change those parameters and you’ll still eat battery, just less of it. In the NA config of the car where the REx only comes on at 7% battery, this is a critical failing, but OBD coding the car to enable on-demand REx at any point below 75% (and then hold state of charge) transforms it into a whole new beast that’s extremely road trip capable.

Weird way for Ford to announce they're going out of business.

You seriously overestimate the impact of BEVs for the next few decades.

When (not if) Ford goes under, it's not going to be overnight. I would be surprised if they don't have enough gas in the tank (ha) for another two decades, no matter how bad their decisions are; there's always customers willing to buy their products.

*Ford:* Makes giant, electric pickup truck that you can't purchase for less than $85,000 and your normal, weekend warrior has no need for to make their Home Depot runs. *Also Ford:* WhERe aRe all tHe cUstOmerS?! I don't understand what's so hard to understand about selling EVs like hotcakes. Make a reasonably sized vehicle, with a reasonable range, at a reasonable price point. They already have the Maverick. An excel…

>That truck would sell gangbusters. Nope. Live in Texas, where there are plenty of people with top level F150s, Raptors, 250s, 350s and so on. Ive seen maybe like 5 Lightnings total since they came out, despite them being the same price. Full size trucks is a different market. Car frame Trucks like Rivian or Maveric make sense because they are trucks for car people that like the idea of a truck. People don't really c…

I love electric vehicles, but I want something that lands somewhere between the DIY-esque Slate and the literally-costs-more-than-I-paid-for-my-house F-150 Lightning. I have a 23 Chevy Bolt EUV which is the sweet spot for me right now, I just wish it had AWD for the winters where I live.

>I just wish it had AWD for the winters where I live. Why? People always say this. AWD doesn't help you stop faster. It won't help you get around the corner. You aren't on a racetrack. Buy better tires. A real set of winter specialized tires will do better than any powertrain option. If you are absolutely insistent that no really you are totally special, get studded tires. The best snow performance I've ever had out…

So I don't get stuck lol

Don't patronize me. I've lived in Iowa for 35+ years, I know how to drive in the snow.
