Not at this magnitude. If you read the latest Semianalysis article, Microsoft’s current infra project is the largest infra project currently being undertaken by humankind (not sure if that’s overstatement, but regardless, $50B largely and competently directed towards (Open)AI-supporting hardware isn’t something easily replicable)

Apple is sitting on $162B in cash right now and would definitely benefit from OpenAI's IP.

I always figured it’s because HN is run by Y Combinator, a technology startup accelerator, so inevitably many of the folks here will be more pro entrepreneurship than non-profit.

I've always viewed it as more of a hacker's hangout with the unfortunate side-effect of being YC-sponsored being that you sometimes have to put up with some dumb corporate news here and there, but it seems to be going in a slightly different direction for a while now (or more likely I was just always wrong on this one :P).

There is an enormous YC bias here. ShowHN posts from new YC startups are upvoted instantly whilst most from outside are ignored - the ones you see are the exception. The HN rules state you are not meant to play the game of asking people to boost your post but it seems like time and time again they co-ordinate, or allow it, for the insiders.

Assuming the Reddit app does not use certificate pinning, you can use your computer to provide internet to your phone and then use an app like Charles Proxy to inspect requests being made from an app. Pretty easy to reverse engineer the API. That does not sound like the proper way to do an openAI 2.0. If Reddit ever hears that's how an AI company scraped them, they'll get sued for fun and profits.

The difficulty, in this case, doesn't seem to lie in the chosen objective. Rather, the investors, ex-CEO, and many, many employees don't believe in the non-profit objectives. They want money and power. So, it seems like the difficulty is building an organization where people willingly reject money and power when presented with the option.

You can legally scrape anything that does not require a login in the US. You can also legally train an AI on it for now.

It seems more like Microsoft controls the whole thing, and they do. They have a near-majority of shares.

I doubt it is fixable. Firing aside (which will be hard, but not impossible to make peace on), they have fundamental differences in goals. Even if you force a shotgun marriage to save the company, I would bet this will be a short term reprieve. Both goals can be successfully pursued, just not at the same company. My 2c.

There are many versions of GPT-4 model that appeared after the first one. My point is that Google and others still cannot match the quality of the first one, more than a year after it was trained.
