> What's wrong with these people? It's Utah. Utah, for all the ways that actually matter, is effectively a theocracy operated by an ultra-conservative religious minority. Utah is about as similar to the rest of the United States as the rest of the United States is similar to the Middle East.

> an ultra-conservative religious minority AFAICT, within the state, Mormons are not a minority but a majority. Wikipedia says[1] 60.68% as of 2020. --- [1] https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Demographics_of_Utah

I think the OP meant that they were a minority nationwide and worldwide. It isn’t surprising at all that they are a majority in UT; that is literally where they breed, heh.

Hyperbole much? Comparing Utah to the Middle East is a bit disingenuous.

Where are you based? I can purchase alcohol from Amazon UK with no obvious age checks. Deliveroo require that riders verify your age but in reality they just ask you to type it in. And the major grocery stores deliver alcohol without any obvious checking too. I imagine teenage drinking is much easier these days thanks to the above :)

> I can purchase alcohol from Amazon UK with no obvious age checks Using your UK credit card? If so, that's an age check in itself.

Here’s a common UK bank (well, building society technically) that has a Visa debit card for their kids account from 11 and up: https://www.nationwide.co.uk/current-accounts/flexone/

But is pornography dangerous for minors? Has it been researched? What "dangers" are there? Do these apply to all age groups of "minors"?

It's addictive for one. There are increasing number of support groups for men who are struggling with pornography use and for their spouses in dealing with having a dependant partner. It creates a space for people to explore and normalise their distressing sexual interests without questioning the root causes. Producers will often intentionally seek out vulnerable young women and groom them with promises of fame and r…

Do you have sources for any of these points, or are they all personal opinion?

It's really not that crazy. "allowed to use common sense" is a loophole you could drive a semi truck through.

Good, I don't want to live in an open-air prison where everything has to be approved by some administrator.

Okay, so advocate for repealing laws that age-restrict sales of alcohol, tobacco, etc. I don't think you'll find much support for your position, and until you do the company has a duty to do basic due diligence to not break the law.

What does society do to solve the peanut problem? Outside of schools, it seems totally on the parent to stop the kid from eating peanuts. The parent does the grocery shopping, asks the right questions when taking the kid to a restaurant, and lets friends/other caregivers know not to give peanuts to the child. People do "make changes" for specific allergies & food restrictions by making the information available & cre…

> What does society do to solve the peanut problem? We mandate labeling. We could not do that and just say "parents, you must run a peanut-detection lab or have extremely restricted diets of only food you make yourself, to keep your kids safe", but we don't.

I have no issue with labelling requirements for large commercial operations. To be honest I thought we already had that for adult content, given the specific TV/radio limits and the "confirm you're 18" popups so popular on the web.

I realize I'm beating a dead analogy here, but I don't think we should impose those labelling restrictions on independent hobbyist websites, just like we don't require licensing or ingredient labelling for small bake sales.

But even if we did, "label obviously-adult content" would be way more reasonable than "collect personal information to verify the real-life identity of site visitors, and log this sensitive data so it can be accessed (/hacked) later"

Theocracies can be elected. I fail to see how your definition of a theocracy automatically disqualifies Utah from being an "effective theocracy".

> Theocracies can be elected.

No, they can't, at least not by a general citizenship against a general pool of candidates. The Vatican's citizens don't get to elect the pope, and among those few who do vote, they can't choose a Bhuddist to be Pope.

> I fail to see how your definition of a theocracy automatically disqualifies Utah from being an "effective theocracy".

Well,I think you have to try really, really hard, not to see that.

The porn did not "relieve" anything, it was the source of the problem.

Thanks for sharing your anecdote. Because it hasn't been my experience, I prefer to take scientific studies as my guide.

What studies? The link you shared is a click-baity ("Science stopped believing in X and you should too") article by an individual clinical psychologist referencing (and overstating) the findings of a proposed etiological model and accompanying systematic review which suggested moral incongruity as one underlying cause, perhaps the key cause in these authors opinions[0].

Notably this study predated the addition of compulsive sexual behavior disorder to ICD-11 and was neither validated nor accepted as the correct model (hence excessive use of 'proposed' and 'preliminary'). You may also notice there are seven separate commentaries in response to this study with an eighth by the original authors in which they acknowledge the several limitations of their proposed model[1] and make the following statement:

"Rather than present an argument against CSBD, it is our intention and belief that our model of PPMI adds needed nuance to ensure the accurate use of the CSBD diagnosis."

Have you spent much time in Utah? Off the top of my head I can’t think of an organization that could be considered an even distant second to the LDS church in terms of influence over policies brought to and enacted by the elected officials in that state.

It's a constitutional republic that got taken over by a 51% attack that, thanks in part to FPTP elections, they've leveraged into a supermajority.

Well, both regions are deserts occupied in majority by religious zealots of a single ethnic group that believe in polygamy and their economy is primarily driven by natural resource exports (oil for the Middle East; gold, other metals, and agricultural products for Utah). I don't think the comparison is that far off.

Utah is 85% white and 60% Mormon, so...

The only reason that Utah isn't whiter and more Mormon is due to all the immigrant workers, just like the Middle East...
