The funny thing is the minors know how to use a VPN to get around this law whereas the many older users don't! So, in Utah the minors will be able to access porn and many of the adults will not! Good job Utah!

Maybe that was true for millennials vis-a-vis boomers. But Gen Z is far less tech savvy than millennials or Gen X. My parents couldn’t have blocked my access to anything. But my wife and I can easily do so with our kids.

Kids have a knack for learning what they need to learn. Need a VPN to view porn? They'll get it figured out!

I had this a lot during the pandemic lockdown, for groceries and takeout… things that weren’t even liquid or food were mislabeled in some database as alcohol, requiring stressful social interaction when the whole point was no contact dropoff. Crazy how people aren’t allowed to use common sense but have to follow an apps instructions.

It's really not that crazy. "allowed to use common sense" is a loophole you could drive a semi truck through.

Good, I don't want to live in an open-air prison where everything has to be approved by some administrator.

What evidence do you have that the incel movement is driven by pornography? I always attributed it to the recruitment efforts of the alt-right and other misogynistic groups.

Guys, the incel “movement” is just dudes not getting laid and whining about it. It’s as old as time. They just happen to be on the Internet now and we’ve atomized society to the point where they’re super common. Most everyone is an incel until they’re not. After all - there’s a point where you want sex and aren’t getting it. Thus, an incel.

I think you're underselling the problem a bit. Before the internet, dudes who whine about not getting laid were generally not able to organize effectively into social echo chambers, at least to the same extent as today. In 'meatspace', people are exposed to other people who have a wide array of experiences, including older more experienced men who tell the young incels to quit bitching and go talk to women.

Online, in incel echo chambers, such voices of reason and wisdom are expelled. The incels then spiral into unchallenged worldviews that alienate them from the general public, isolating them from women and everybody else even more than they were before.

An identity provider can make verified age one of the claims on an OAuth token. It removes anonymity, but at least you don't have to provide your personal details to everybody on the internet demanding age verification. You provide those details to your trusted identity provider, they provide the claim of your age to the website. With that in place we can easily make beer, liquor, marijuana and tobacco sales on the i…

More interesting data for the identity provider.. Leaving the filtering to the client side is a less intrusive method and puts the responsibility into the hands of parents (or work places). rtalabel.org proposes simple well-known meta tags to simplify this filtering.

I support the idea of shifting this to the client side, but RTA seems to be going about it in a rather bizarre way:

> Hit the SELECT TAG button, then copy and paste this META tag into the header section of every page on your site that includes content inappropriate for minors:

>

So far so good...

> by using the label you signify that you agree to our TERMS AND CONDITIONS.

...uh, what?

I'd rather support a different implementation released as an open standard.

Right? Why can't you scan your ID and then be prompted what information to share with the system, like age? I scan my ID, the system asks to retrieve age information, it retrieves it, now I can proceed to scan my alcohol. No human interaction required. If the person manning the self-checkout operations thinks you look awfully young to be buying alcohol then they can always demand to see your ID. Simple.

Lots of places have mandatory ID checks regardless of appearance.

Stop complying with them. If they won't sell to you, take your business elsewhere and tell them why. If they whine about laws tell them to hire better lobbyists.

ummm. Don't think of the US this way? Think of it as a complex representative government that is federated and representing a highly diverse population, unlike Iran, which is not exactly pro-immigration. Our government is at least partly reactive to our votes. Utah is very different from Colorado or California or Connecticut. So, no, nothing like rich Iran.

>Our government is at least partly reactive to our votes So is Iran's. Keep in mind the country is a theocratic Republic that turned out this way because of a popular religious revolt against a secular absolutist monarch. That bottom up, democratic, religious zealotry is something you also have in the US but virtually nowhere in the developed world.

Don't know what to tell you, man. The US is drastically more diverse than Iran, and as a result is not nearly as hegemonic. Also, the US is a lot more moderate in its views and policies than Iran. The US political party rhetoric is quite different than a lot of our policies actually are. Sure, much of the political right in the US leans puritanical, but, that leaning is a still more lip service to a small, vocal base than broadly representative of our population.

It's addictive for one. There are increasing number of support groups for men who are struggling with pornography use and for their spouses in dealing with having a dependant partner. It creates a space for people to explore and normalise their distressing sexual interests without questioning the root causes. Producers will often intentionally seek out vulnerable young women and groom them with promises of fame and r…

Sugar is addictive. And it might have more effect on your lifespan than the consumption of pornography. Quality of life, too.

Why do I see this fallacy all over anti-porn threads? Keto diets might be a fad and about as difficult as quitting porn, but still.

>What's wrong with these people? someone told me once "Think of the US less like a secular Western European country and more like a very rich Iran" and that really does help to make sense of a lot of these decisions

Isn't the US still the world largest producer of porn? Honestly we (Europeans) make the same mistake the Americans do in regards to us, we view the US as one homogeneous mass. The difference between states seems like it's often as great as between European nations. I'd be less concerned about the laws of the individual state, if companies did target the lowest common denominator for the entire US, just to make busine…

Yes you have it correct.

When introducing myself to Europeans now I've started saying the state I'm from, such as "I'm from the state of Idaho in the US". Utah is a different state/place than Idaho (see liquor laws, state lottery) and both are very different than California or New York. They're almost like different countries in some ways, especially over the last 10 or so years. Not too long ago you could pretty much live anywhere and the main difference would be where you buy your booze and your tax rates, but that's increasingly changing.

On the rather extreme end, there are some serious movements for secession from the US. Funny enough they don't usually go very far because (shockingly /s) the red states drop their enthusiasm when a red president gets elected, and the blue states drop theirs when a blue get elected. But if we had a steady president for 3 or more terms, I would bet you it gets serious again.

We don't apply this principle to something like peanut allergies. "If your kid touches a peanut, that's on you as a parent"? No, people recognized that peanuts are harmful enough to a certain segment of the population that it's worth making changes, even changes that might inconvenience others. Besides, I'm not sure why you think that parents are able to be 100% in control of things that their children see/eat/etc. S…

Writing "produced on equipment that also processes peanuts" on a food label is hardly inconveniencing others. It's still very much on the parents to prevent harm to their peanut-allergic children. As an aside, the sharp rise in nut allergies is itself an unintended consequence of another well-meaning attempt at social engineering: about 30 years ago, manufacturers began printing "CHOKING HAZARD: DO NOT FEED NUTS TO C…

Do you have kids in school? Our kids aren’t allowed to pack peanuts in their lunches because parents can’t put an allergic kid in a cafeteria otherwise.

A struggling person finding relief in porn doesn't mean that porn is addictive.

The porn did not "relieve" anything, it was the source of the problem.

Thanks for sharing your anecdote. Because it hasn't been my experience, I prefer to take scientific studies as my guide.
