It is disturbing that, in American politics, "conservative" is basically synonymous with "right-wing nationalist." They've managed to turn a useful term used by a minority into a pejorative, "bias." At a time when it is really hard to distinguish fact from fiction in media we're on the verge of having super-convincing auto-complete generating a deluge of generated media. It seems it is becoming a political goal to in…

It seems pretty transparently biased if it can't even write a single sentence in praise of Trump's policies, but will happily write them for Obama or Biden. There's numerous Trump-era policies that even Democrats agree with, such as maternity leave, prison reform et cetera. The fact it won't means a partisan has their finger on the scale.

And should highlight how contagious these things can be. Almost every chat AI that has come to market has become a hate-filled 4chan troll in a matter of hours of being exposed to the Internet.

Trying to develop a fair, fact-based model seems to be about as difficult as moderating a social media platform.

I have the sneaking suspicion that "woke" has been turned into a dog whistle used by right leaning people. Maybe it's the new "uppity." Given how commonly it is used on this website which I otherwise appreciate, I would love to be convinced that this is not the case. To that end: 1) Can anyone who freely uses the word "woke" pejoratively please define "woke" as you use it? 2) Can you please tell me the opposite of "w…

Defining it succinctly is hard, but I’d describe ‘wokeism’ as a kind of opposite of ‘traditionalism’, or the belief that any traditional societal views & perspectives are necessarily detrimental.

These "current AI systems" that you're talking about were presumably specifically trained by "woke" Silicon Valley employees to reflect their opinions about what the AI should answer [1], which are hardly representative of the general population's opinions. > If conservatives want a fascist chatbot they can train their own off of 8chan, Stormfront, Parlor, etc... I don't think conservatives want a fascist chatbot. Th…

Actually, "woke" opinions do reflect those of the general population, which is exactly why conservatives feel they live in some kind of progressive hellscape.

Conservatives feel like they live in a progressive hellscape because the 8% of the population that’s “woke” has disproportionate power in media and communications—which everyone is exposed to every day: https://hiddentribes.us/profiles/

I think what you're saying makes sense. I was not aware of the full breadth of negativity associated with the term "woke". I think I will start using the term "progressive politics" from now on (at least, as long as it makes sense). That said, there is a clear distinction between modern progressive politics (of the "woke" type) and the progressive politics from a few decades ago, and I think "woke" is a term that mak…

> Not to be glib, but this is the nature of "progress" - it changes things. ;)

Well, I genuinely hope you are right.. :)

But note that not everything that we call or called "progress" is necessarily positive. We have made quite a few mistakes before which we thought was progress.

Probably too many to mention, even, but as examples, I can think of the Dark Ages and Nazism.

Mind you, I'm not saying modern liberal politics can be compared to these examples! I don't even known that much about history to be able to comment on them.

It's just food for thought.

Our current "AI" systems are just fancy automatic copy & paste engines. All they do is remix the input data and spit it back out. This is why AI art engines are great a creating composite images, but hopeless when you ask it to produce something completely novel. If conservatives want a fascist chatbot they can train their own off of 8chan, Stormfront, Parlor, etc...

Is it really just “copying and pasting” when I can tell ChatGPT to create what ends up being 30-60 line Python scripts based on my specific requirements that I am 99% sure hasn’t been written anywhere? These are various AWS automation scripts using the AWS SDK.

1) a stab at a definition: groupthink Karenism with attempted (often successful) group enforcement

2) a stab at the opposite of woke: Live and let live

Interestingly it’s not the opposite of conservative. It shares a lot of conservatism’s intolerance in some ways.

Ayan Hirsi Ali, who grew up witnessing the transformation of her culture from open and liberal to one stifled and strictly controlled by the Muslim Brotherhood, says that she sees in the growing woke phenomenon the same oppressive progression that horrified her with the cultural change of her youth.

In my mind it's just something I do to be respectful to people I interact with. Well, ~99% of people don't need to specify the pronouns they wish to be called with because everybody already called them by those pronouns. So you should ask yourself: why are all these peop…

> Mind you, this is not the same liberal politics from a few decades ago.

Might it be that those who occupy the left-of-centre political space hold more nuanced and varied positions than the sort of monolithic bloc that you would have readers believe? Yes, at both poles of the political axis there are those who strive to impose their own purity tests - whether it’s over pronouns, or guns, or immigration, or the proper lexicon to use, or marriage rights or whatever. But the rest of us can unbundle and reassemble policy positions for ourselves. I would hope this is true on the left and the right. But maybe it’s misplaced hope…

Or, rather than posting non-sense, you could learn about what "woke" usually means in this context, which I can quote for you [1]: "shorthand for American Left ideas involving identity politics and social justice" "By 2020, members of the political center and right wing in several Western countries were using the term woke, often in an ironic way, as an insult for various progressive or leftist movements and ideologi…

"Woke" as used by conservatives now more or less just means that when you're an asshole in public that someone might actually call you on it.

AIs produced by companies who want to sell to the general public will want them to generally not be acting like assholes.

Similarly to how the workers in big-box stores generally don't express strong political opinions.

It's be more accurate to say the word "woke" is a conservative satire of the left side of the aisle - it does not convey meaning about the ideology itself, but about the reaction to it. It's also not super accurate to say its about identity politics, as the right leans heavily on that approach with different identities. Instead of race, it's being Christian. Everything is identity politics - abortion and 2A are possi…

I've noticed people using "identity politics" where I think they really mean "intersectionality."

Also, I have no dog in this fight, I've been out of the US for a few years. Though my outsider perspective (right/wrong/indifferent) is that intersectionality has been a substantive policy plank on the left.

The right has utilized identity politics as a means to expand their "big tent" and to drive voter turnout.

Please don't take HN threads further into ideological flamewar hell. I realize this topic is ideologically charged, but that's more of a reason to avoid flamewar, not less.
