Well, Japan has APPI and as far as I know APPI is semi-equivalent to GDPR (which would be the EU's "horrible" Internet law, which doesn't apply only to the Internet btw). So you might hate Japan as well, right?

#272It seems like the problem with many of these tech companies (and many modern companies in general) is that they've scaled faster than they have the ability to operate properly. "How can we possibly moderate properly without AI?" is really just another way of saying "We don't want to pay the money it's going to cost to moderate effectively and we're going to cross our fingers that we can solve problems caused by techn…
And then only one company would have enough moderators. Moderators are a finite resource, there aren't even enough humans alive to moderate all content on all platforms.
But, the law goes "well figure something out, you have to moderate", and now we've by law guaranteed that whatever solution that gets implemented to follow the letter of the law is going to be shit, because it's by definition going to be automated content moderation, and given the volumes involved, it's modern neural-net based because that's the only technology that's even remotely shown it has an over 50% success rate.
Well done, us.

Somehow it's only Fanbyte that have this problem with people in Turkey / Serbia etc. Why has no other publisher went to such measures?
Incredibly, they had a remote employee in Serbia, so when they banned all these countries, they banned one of their employees. Last I heard they were telling him to use a VPN to bypass their own corporate rules (which they have admitted exist to dodge Serbian laws...!)
Because if the company has no physical presence in a certain country, they can basically ignore their laws, because what’s the country going to do? Block your website?
Having an employee there establishes physical presence.

Eh, I don't buy the public square argument. The online world is a cesspool filled with bots and crazy people. I don't need to voice my opinion on Twitter, nor is Twitter a place I need to be . What matters is how we relate to the people around us, in our communities. Your neighbor isn't a bot, the barista at the coffee shop isn't a russian troll. We need to stop taking the "online world" so seriously and connect with…
If I am interpreting this correctly, and I may not be, it seems like you are saying "The online world does not contain public squares, and that is because we need to change what everyone else in the world considers a public square." If I am interpreting that correctly, I don't know what I can add here. I don't necessarily disagree, but I think we have moved past that possibility. How many of us know our neighbors and…

This was uncalled for man.
Why is it ok to collectively hate bankers, people working in big tobacco, salesmen in big pharma and many other industries that we know for being damaging to society, but when it comes to Big Tech we suddenly think "it is uncalled for"? Facebook is a deplorable company and its leadership is known to have a completely broken moral compass. But why should we hold only the leadership accountable? It is the developers, t…

When folks call trans people "degenerate", as many are wont to do on reddit (and as reddit is well known for), it's probably safe to assume they're not just trying to be playful.
> When folks call trans people "degenerate", as many are wont to do on reddit (and as reddit is well known for), it's probably safe to assume they're not just trying to be playful. Can you link to such comment that was left unmoderated on reddit despite being reported?

#277> But there’s also a larger thing here where Twitter apparently has moderation tools so powerful that they can immediately trigger bans for things other than what they’re actually looking for. The actual execution leaves a lot to be desired here, but the itchy trigger finger cannot be denied. Somehow they can do this, but racial slurs are generally pretty okay, white supremacy is largely ignored, and every Twitter tr…

#280This is how big tech does damage to humans. Love it or hate it, the online world is our current public square. A public square, in the united states, has typically been an area where people can shout out their concerns or whatever they want to anyone who can listen and the government cannot stop it. Currently, our public squares are owned by private megacorporations that not only ban people for reasons many people ag…
I had felt the same in 2015 when I got banned from Facebook for not providing my real data (they asked me to provide a photo of my ID which I thought and still think was silly). But then I realised how good it was for me (as a user) and started thinking maybe we should aim to go back to the 'small Internet'. By this I mean small forums, maybe chat rooms or something of that sort. I often go back in memories to the la…
