That is terrifying! I try to stay away from Teslas I see on the road because they are completely unpredictable. I think I'd prefer being near a poor driver with their attention on the controls to Autopilot with a poor driver not paying attention. Tesla just closed their whole self-driving office in San Mateo, and fired ("for poor performance") most of the staff, directing some to come to work across the bay. For now. That’s a misleading headline. Tesla let go of their labeling team because they weren’t needed anymore.
Whenever somebody calls musk the smartest man in the world, they don't understand the connection between data labeling and Tesla's propensity to stop for nothing and crash into stopped emergency vehicles.

#165This feels like an escalation from the usual cars and bollards and things. Possibly The Algorithm has become bored, and we can expect a series of robocars menacing more and more unlikely vehicles, culminating in a spectacular near-miss with a zeppelin.

#166This is model 3. You have to expect some compromises on the budget systems. Do the flagship models (S, Plaid) have better systems?
We do not, in fact, have to expect compromising the safety of everybody on the road just because it is a "budget" product.

I just can’t understand why you’d give up control to a system that’s clearly still in beta. The cost of failure is way too high to take the risk.
Because they're led to believe all this public beta "testing" actually does something to improve the system. So they go out on roads, enable FSD and click the feedback button when it makes a mistake. It's pure theatre as it does nothing to a system fundamentally poor.
They /are/ the training data and trainers in a very literal sense. Every time they correct or take control over FSD I imagine it gets fed back into the training data. Will it ever create a fully self driving system? Maybe.

Why is the guy an idiot?
I don't know if the guy is an idiot or not but I personally wouldn't have handed the wheel over to an AI right next to a school bus in order to find out if it was going to run the kids over.
Seems like he had it under control, and was recording it in order to publicize the problem and possibly get it fixed.
