There are 3 M1 series chips, the M1, the M1 Pro, and the M1 Max. The M1 is a different die to the M1 Pro and M1 Max. I believe the Pro and Max are the same die binned differently as you alluded to.

They are all different dies. However, the M1 Pro is just an M1 Max design with a chunk lopped off the bottom. Not at the manufacturing stage; at the design stage. They are otherwise identical; the device tree representation of the M1 Max is a superset of the M1 Pro, down to memory addresses and everything.

Binning comes in with the lower-core-count variants of each chip.

3.5%-5% increase in performance at more than double the wattage, for a chip that is not in consumers hands against a chip that basically hasn't changed and was released 14 months ago~ This is not the victory that the title implies. It's also a _little_ bit funny that the i9 laptop was double the price, given people usually rant loudly about how expensive Apple computers are.

I don’t think this is going to happen, but: It would be extremely funny if Apple strapped a heavy copper heatsink and a turbo fan to an M1 and just overclocked the ever-lasting crap out of it. If this was released and allowed for relatively straightforward overclocking, user replaceable RAM and a full size GPU of one’s choosing, what could they charge?

The M1 Mad Macs edition would be loved by all 9 of us.

Yeah - I think it's a question of what the different target markets are willing to pay. A lot of people want gaming laptops, so systems with big GPUs and big CPUs and not so great size/weight/battery life can be had relatively cheap. But most people that want big CPUs and good battery life but don't care about the GPU so much are people who need the system for their job, so manufacturers can get away with pricing tho…

Out of curiosity what jobs need a good CPU but also can't take advantage of a good GPU? It seems like most of the high performance numerical computing software today is GPU-accelerated. If performance for your job is super important, why isn't your software GPU-accelerated? I might just be naive but it's honestly hard for me to imagine why anybody would need a good CPU and not also want a good GPU.

Static code analysis on 100s of mb of code. Pins my m1max for 3min, my 2015 for 15-20ish.

Hold on - it's 2022, and an extremely high end $4000 laptop with the latest Intel CPU and an NVIDIA 3080Ti comes with a display that's... 1080 resolution? My 2008 17" MacBook Pro has a screen that's 1920 x 1200. My iPhone 6+ is 1920 x 1080. What am I missing? Is the non-Apple world really fine with stagnant resolutions?

Yes basically 95% of PC monitors are < 100 DPI.

That's just sad. Personally, I can't go back to displays with low DPI. Too much strain for my eyes.

Apple (if they were willing to expose a more wild side) should make an "M1 Pro Max Unlocked" board (or something like that) and just sell it as a bare, microATX board. It could cost exactly the same as the Mac mini for all I care, but if PC builders could use it in crazy cases and with liquid (or even liquid nitrogen) cooling, that would be so cool.

Would love a liquid cooled mac.

I switched about half a year ago from a MacBook Pro with an Intel processor to MacBook Pro with an M1 processor. My overall impression was "when the hell will it run out of power"? I spent the whole working day (without a charger) and it was still at 60%, while I was constantly stressed before when I had to do something without a charger for more than 3-4 hours. I don't care what any test, but tripling battery life w…

Part of it might be new battery effect too. I just popped a new battery in my 2012 and just doing light dev work I could stretch it to 8 hours or so. This thing was doing like 3 hours on a good day before.

Also, for every Android commentator talking about ARM, consider that Apple even named the company "Advanced RISC Machines," because they opposed having the name of a former competitor in there (because it was originally going to be "Acorn RISC Machine"). Apple also provided almost all the funding and initial leadership for the venture, while Acorn supplied most of the engineers and VLSI the silicon tooling.

Wouldn't solve the problem. Basically you need the integrated components to have shorter transition times. These are an inherent property of the component: speeding up the transition time basically means "replace this component with a different component that has a shorter transition time"

Overvolting the component and sending more current to any transistor tends to speed it up, though at the cost of severely more watts used. Overclocking is often a combination of overvolting (leading to more amps), allowing you to increase clock speeds.

A lot of people are misinterpreting the results here (understandably, the article is pretty bad). They're benchmarking the CPU, but measuring the power draw of a whole laptop - including a dedicated 3080ti GPU which will still be drawing a decent amount of power even at idle. This benchmark is useful for measuring the speed and power draw of /this specific laptop/ vs an m1 MacBook, but not so much this new i9 in gene…

I imagine the GPU also draws lower power during idle, so they would both scale at undefined rates when benchmarking
