Hold on - it's 2022, and an extremely high end $4000 laptop with the latest Intel CPU and an NVIDIA 3080Ti comes with a display that's... 1080 resolution?

My 2008 17" MacBook Pro has a screen that's 1920 x 1200. My iPhone 6+ is 1920 x 1080.

What am I missing? Is the non-Apple world really fine with stagnant resolutions?

I switched about half a year ago from a MacBook Pro with an Intel processor to MacBook Pro with an M1 processor. My overall impression was "when the hell will it run out of power"? I spent the whole working day (without a charger) and it was still at 60%, while I was constantly stressed before when I had to do something without a charger for more than 3-4 hours. I don't care what any test, but tripling battery life w…

I don’t find the same. Chrome seems to eat the battery a lot in my experience.

I’m not, I’m sure for every modder that puts a new motherboard and mech keyboard in, there are 100000 that just get pitched

I don’t know about equal. It would certainly be better.

But the problem is that’s hypothetical. The article is comparing products available today. And that’s what Intel has to compete with.

Intel touted this as their “answer” to the M1. They may have overplayed their hand. Maybe should have held that marketing point for next year.

Not only that but the Apple GPU is around double the strength of the Intel integrated GPU. Obviously the 3080 smashes the Apple GPU but that comes at a huge power cost.

Seriously why can’t Intel make a decent igpu? My understanding is that the M1 GPU is just “ok” and isn’t competing with AMD or nvidia?

the fact is, apple hardware is not _that_ expensive relative to what you get for the money. Their supply chain is super optimized, and it's hard to beat them on price if a competitor decides to try (at the same quality that is).

What gives people the perception of apple being expensive is that other OEMs play tricks to boost numbers on a spec sheet that the common person checks while cheeping out massively on parts that don’t show on the spec sheet.

I know someone who got an MSI laptop recently and it’s complete garbage. The screen casing cracked from the force of the hinge within months, the trackpad is borderline unusable, wifi is spotty, the paint on the keyboard started flaking off within months, and it’s a general piece of junk.

But on the store page it looks like an extreme bargain because it has the same ram, GPU and cpu as much more expensive laptops

I don’t think this is going to happen, but: It would be extremely funny if Apple strapped a heavy copper heatsink and a turbo fan to an M1 and just overclocked the ever-lasting crap out of it. The crazy thing about using a Macbook Pro (with an M1 Pro or M1 Max CPU) is that, in single-threaded performance, it's really no faster than a dippy little Macbook Air. I fully expect this is what the new Mac Pro will look like, probably with multiple M1s.

Why would you normalize for that? The subject at hand is the product performance. Could Intel's design turn out better in future generations? Perhaps. I think to consider weighing which process node was used for the CPU changes the subject to Intel's prospects as a CPU designer/manufacturer.

If we normalize for Moore's law then historic processors would compare much more favorably.

In fact it's a bit unfair to Apple to compare this sample unit to last year's production model.
