I can't find any data to support your claim of a higher death rate in Denmark than all of 2020. The data I have show: - Denmark currently experiencing a massive new wave of infections - Previous large wave of infections was last winter, with rate peaking on Dec 18 - Daily deaths peaked one month later at about 8 per 1000 daily infections - Current daily deaths, accounting for lag, is also about 8 per 1000 daily infec…

Yeah, but this is HackerNews. The antivax crowd is strong here. Brandolini's law in full effect in this comment.

Please don't perpetuate flamewars on HN, and please especially don't post supercilious dismissals of the community. Such perceptions are nearly always in the eye of the beholder and make such comments particularly tedious and degrading. That's why the site guidelines include: "Please don't sneer, including at the rest of the community."

Edit: it looks like you've been doing this repeatedly—can you please stop that, and stick to posting thoughtful contributions to whatever discussion is at hand?

I understand the need/temptation to posture defensively against the community/the masses/idiots/society/whatever—I don't mean this pejoratively; I think literally all of us do it—but because it's such a mechanical reaction, it makes for particularly low-quality comments.

Vaccine mandates are already ubiquitous across the Western world (and the non-Western world). In most cases, it is infants and children having a "medical procedure" forced on them. Your point still stands, but in reality an overwhelming consensus exists that vaccines are an acceptable exemption to bodily autonomy. EDIT: I didn't make an argument, I only stated uncontroversial facts. Would love an explanation of downv…

You think there’s an overwhelming consensus that bodily autonomy ends when a vaccine is concerned?

In practice, yes. It is codified into law in countless nations and there are no major movements to change those laws. So in terms of the reality of being a living human being in any given society (free or not), yes, bodily autonomy is limited by many, many things by the state, one of those being vaccine mandates. You may not like it, but that is simply the reality.

With exponential spread, the actual number of ICU beds really doesn't matter, because whatever you've got will be overwhelmed across a similar timeframe anyway. The only way to actually fix the problem is to get the R-value below 1, which requires mass vaccinations.

People who claim that "people don't understand exponential growth" don't understand it themselves, most of the time. They're so proud that they can answer the question about what happens to the pond that is half-covered by sea lilies the next day but never think about what happens the day after that. tldr: There is no persistent exponential growth in nature.

I'm surprised to find this many anti vaxxers on hn. I would have expected that the community was a lot more rational.

I'm not surprised at all. This site is a honeypot for anti authoritarian contrarians.

sadly, this is a pretty concise "nutshell".

All kinds of vaccines have been mandatory for generations. You wouldn't have been allowed to attend school if you hadn't had loads of them. In the US for instance all schoolchildren are required to be vaccinated against diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis, polio, varicella, measles, and rubella, and almost all states also require vaccinations against mumps and hepatitis B. So please don't act like requiring vaccination is…

All kinds of vaccines are also not required, namely the flu vaccine, which covid arguably has more in common with than any of the other diseases above.

however, in a hospital setting they are required, by government mandate.

Because the risk of transmission is understood to be significantly lower, and since unvaccinated people are more likely to cause the virus to mutate it's in the governments best interest to get people vaccinated, a way of accomplishing this could be making life inconvenient for the uncompliant.

> and since unvaccinated people are more likely to cause the virus to mutate If you understand natural selection, then this assertion makes zero sense. Where in the genome do we see the accumulation of mutations in all covid variants seen so far? In their S-protein. Where does Omicron have 30+ mutations? In its S-protein. What is the single protein that the mRNA vaccines code for?? Yes, if you reason from first princ…

groups of people who know just a little about a subject tend to cease questioning their reasoning, and a dunning kruger is born. groups of people with more knowledge tend to ask more questions before accepting a new position. therefore, a dunning kruger is born more frequently among the former group. however, migrating pesky dunning krugers then tend to persist in either group.

I find it ironic that there are plenty comments that paint the picture of how mandatory vaccinations divide the country. Hello? Have you been awake for the last month? How much more divided can a country already be when the absolute democratic majority has made their decision months ago to take the shot but 30% are holding everyone back. Anyone in my family or from my friends that has taken one for the team (and got…

I’m pro-vax. I’ve taken the shots and the booster. But I fail to see the point of this lockdown. If you are 70% vaccinated as a country and the remainder of the 30% is possibly low risk why lockdown? You’ll never get to 100% vaccinated or even 90%. If the 70% vaccinated isn’t reducing the load on the hospitals we have an issue with vaccinations.

They need to reach 100% to eliminate the control group before everyone starts getting sick from them

I'd be more open to getting vaccinated when I see people actively making use of hand sanitizers in stores. When people learn to cover their whole faces with their masks. When they learn to keep distance. Vaccinated people who are old, sick or born with bad luck in the genetic lottery are still at risk. Vaccination doesn't mean people can go back to doing whatever they want. The vaccination itself can be a risk to cer…

Hand sanitizer? We’ve know for over a year now that hand sanitizer does nothing against covid because that’s not how it spreads.

News to me! Could you provide sources for this?

Focus on early treatment. Drugs like ivermectin, hcq, fluvoxamine

Ivermectin and hcq do nothing for covid. No idea what fluvoxamine is.

I hope you or someone close to you never get as desperate as I was. Saved my life.

Just a heads up about what is happening in Germany: (Just got back Monday from Hamburg) 1. Entry restriction: You must be vaccinated to enter from nonEU countries (Vaccation must be in the approved list) 2. Most restaraunt/bars/outdoor gatherings are either 2G/3G. The bahn is 3g (so testing as well). Nearly everything else is 2G. This includes the food hall in the airport. Enforcement is at entry. You must show your…

Does this vaccination entry requirement exist for residents?

It's very loosely checked according to many reports.
