Huge, apparently. I just spent a bit over $7,000 for a top-spec model and was surprised to read that it comes with a 140 watt power adapter. the power supply is for charging the battery faster. the new magsafe 3 system can charge with more wattage than usb-c, as per the announcement. usb-c max wattage is 100 watts, which was the previous limiting factor for battery charge.

The other end of the new MagSafe is usb-c, which gets plugged into the power adapter.

The Client Computing group is larger yes, however few things to keep in mind

1. they don't split revenue for Laptop market alone , So hard to say the impact of laptops (especially Apple) itself on their revenue or margins.

2. Also CCG is much slower growing than the Date Centric Group(DCG) business for Intel in the last 4-5 years as to be expected to be in the future as well.

3. The Apple deal was likely their lowest margin large deal(perhaps even loosing money ). Apple is not known for being generous to suppliers and also Intel was in not in any position of strength to ask great margins in the years leading up to Apple Silicon, the delayed processors and poor performance and threat of Apple Silicon had to have impact on pricing in the deal and therefore their margins.

Not saying that Intel don't have a lot to fix, but it also not that suddenly they are in much worse position than say last year.

Yeah, especially if it could run Linux. This would be a powerful little server. I decked out my workstation with a 16 core Ryzen & 96GB RAM and it didn't cost anywhere near the price of this new 64GB M1 Max combo. (But it may very well be less powerful, which is astonishing. It would be great to at least have the choice.)

Ubuntu already has an ARM build. Is there a reason you wouldn't be able to run linux?

USB-C 3.1 PD delivers up to 240watts.

That's with 2 connectors right? I have a Dell Precision 3760 and the one connector charging mode is limited to around 90W. With two connectors working in tandem (they snap together), it's 180W.

The connectors never get remotely warm .. in fact under max charge rate they're consistently cool to touch, so I've always thought that it could probably be increased a little bit with no negative consequences.

I wouldn't hold your breath. Metal is still a second-class citizen in the GPU world, and there's not much Apple can do to change that. Having powerful hardware alone isn't enough to justify porting software, otherwise I'd be playing Star Citizen on a decommissioned POWER9 mainframe right now.

The major factor Apple has working in their favor with regards to the future of gaming on Macs is iOS. Any game or game engine that wants to support iPhone or iPad devices is going to be most of the way to supporting ARM Macs for "free". My older Intel Macs I'm sure are more or less SOL but they were never intended to be gaming machines.

iPhone games are an entire different beast however, and likely not what people “want”.

At least we still have Minecraft.

I'm not aware of a single even semi-major game (including popular indie titles) that run native on M1 yet. Everything is running under Rosetta and game companies so far seem completely uninterested in native support.

Disco Elysium, EVE Online, Minecraft*, Timberborn, Total War: Rome Remastered, World of Warcraft. Minecraft is kinda cheating, because Java, and even considering that it takes a bit of hacking. Alternatively you can sideload the iOS version.

Graalvm makes Minecraft kinda native heh.

Based on aesthetics and hardware design, the Series X is way more in line with Apple compared to the PS5.

Not that it matters but I should correct that it's a late-2013 model I have. I get confused because I bought it in 2014

Also I ended up pulling the trigger and preordering the base-model 14-inch. Let's hope it's as good as they say!

Do you think it suffers feature creep?

I've used it since 2017 and it hasn't changed much since then. I guess they recently added some online code pairing feature I don't plan on using, but that's all that comes to mind.
