yep, thats definitely true

but it would be nice if the soc itself would be a module that you could upgrade and keep the case/display, it would also cut down on environmental impact probably as well...

Honest question, what do you do where a $6,099 laptop is justifiable?

All depends on your priorities and such.

My personal desktop was about $4k for what's inside the case. Add in my $2k monitor, and I'm right up there.

Some people call it excessive, I do too. But man, my desktop is blazing fast and my gaming experience is top notch.

The $1000 5950x was the easiest decision. Cut my compile times by 80%.

If I was serious about a portable development and such machine that many people with MacBooks are, I could see dropping $6k.

I'm not, hence I have a $2k M1 MBA and remote into my gaming desktop for anything where speed matters.

What do you mean? All the APIs (Xcode SDK, Metal, ML, etc) required to build on their devices are very well documented.

I mean the documentation of the SoC itself. The thousands (or perhaps tens of thousands) of pages of information about every register and peripheral on it.

I know the main reason why the Mac Pro has options for LRDIMMs for terabytes of RAM is specifically for audio production, where people are basically using their system memory as cache for their entire instrument library. I wonder about that too.

My bet is that they will get rid of the Mac Pro entirely. Too low ROI for them at this point.

My hope is to see an ARM workstation where all components are standard and serviceable.

I cannot believe we are in the era of glued batteries and soldered SSDs that are guaranteed to fail and take the whole machine with them.

I'm guessing that's new for the 13" or for the M1, but my 16‑inch MacBook Pro purchased last year had 64GB of memory. (Looks like it's considered a 2019 model, despite being purchased in September 2020).

I don't think this is an apples to apples comparison because of how the new unified memory works

Well technically it is an Apple to Apple comparison in his case.

Don’t think that is entirely true. Lots of features which exist on both RISC and CISC CPUs have different natural fit. Using micro-ops e.g. on a CISC is more important than in RISC CPU even if both benefit. Likewise pipelining has a more natural fit on RISC than CISC, while micro-op cache is more important on CISC than RISC.

I don't even know what RISC or CISC means anymore. They're bad, non-descriptive terms. 30 years ago, RISC or CISC meant something, but not anymore. Today's CPUs are pipelined, out-of-order, speculative, superscalar, (sometimes) SMT, SIMD, multi-core with MESI-based snooping for cohesive caches. These words actually have meaning (and in particular, describe a particular attribute of performance for modern cores). RISC…

Intel microcode updates added new machine opcodes to address spectre/meltdown exploits.

On a true RISC, that's not possible.

Wasn't there a rumor that AMD was creating ARM chips? It will be great if we have ARM versions of EPYC chips.

AMD's equivalent of the Intel Management Engine (ME) is based on ARM, I think. Intel used to use "ARC" cores, but recently converted to and i486.

Laptops are only small component of biz for CPU chip manufacturers like AMD/Intel. AMD is traditionally weak in laptops and has not decent market share ever. This doesn't impact their business that much (Intel's numbers are not down that much after loosing Apple's deal after all) AMD and especially Intel have high margin server CPU business, Apple's entire value prop is low power segment, their chips are not designed…

Sure Intel have a server business but that’s smaller than client computing and revenues there are falling.

I don’t know what the precise % is but if Apple have 8% market share by volume their % of Intel’s client business by value is much higher. Losing a growing customer that represents that much of your business is not a trivial loss.

Of course this is all part of a bigger picture where falling behind TSMC enables a range of competitors both on servers and clients. If they don’t fix their process issues - and they may well under PG - then this will only get worse.

Exactly, corporate never risks them getting into wrong hands, no matter how theoretical risk that might be. Same for phones

We used to remove the hard drives which takes about 20 seconds on a desktop that has a "tool-less" case. Then donate the computer to anybody including the employees if they want it. It takes a few minutes to do that on a laptop but it's not that long.

Seems like FDE would solve that and make it a hardware non-issue.
