I was about to dismiss these as complete fabrication and go on with my life. However, after looking at the font screenshot, I instantly felt a small pinch behind my eyes and at the back of my head. Coincidence ? Maybe, but it happened also with my SO and some members of the family (without warning them first).

So there might be a problem with this font indeed!

Note: we saw the screenshot on my iphone 12.

It looks like they've put a picture of an apple in the Private Use Area as well at U+F8FF. Weird; there's no need for the PUA there; just pick (heh) U+1F34E (red apple) or U+1F34F (green apple).

If you don't have twitter on your phone, you can go to twitter.com and the new font is active.

Yes but we want a comparison. I check Twitter election to election. There is no way for me remember the old font. Let alone compare it to this new one.

I don't know if it's the quality of the screenshot, but the left image (old) looks way more blurry to me then the new one.

It's for compatibility with the Apple logo that is displayed on iOS devices when that codepoint is rendered.

Yeah, that tweet was a definite WTF moment for me. Having to explain what cargo culting is to tech folks, is becoming more rare for me. Yet we continue to try to summon those gods.
