The ‘custom’ font has been identified¹ as Grilli Type GT America ² with minor spacing change and a Twitter logo in the PUA. ¹ https://twitter.com/jeffjose/status/1425626162219286529 ² https://www.grillitype.com/typeface/gt-america
Would have liked some picture examples... This is like somebody typing out what a color looks like.

If you don't have twitter on your phone, you can go to twitter.com and the new font is active.
A tweet showing the actual difference as screenshot: https://twitter.com/Tempo_Storm/status/1425549066377777156 Appears to be a standard-res Windows rendering. (Obviously a Retina Mac/iOS rendering will be totally different.)

It looks like they've put a picture of an apple in the Private Use Area as well at U+F8FF. Weird; there's no need for the PUA there; just pick (heh) U+1F34E (red apple) or U+1F34F (green apple).
However, the x-height is smaller and that bothers me a bit. If I increase the font-size in tweets to 15.5px, it matches old size and looks good again.
> Regardless of whether you’re pro or anti Helvetica, I think we can all agree that it’s not up for the job. … we can? (From https://twitter.com/DerritDeRouen/status/1354548649561186306 )
Just let the damn user decide for themselves. It's ridiculous and stupid that we can't do this.
