I despise the whole sharing economy. I prefer the good old days where i own everything i use.
Maybe that's just not the resource efficient way going forward. Maybe in the future people will laugh at the idea of buying 2 tons of steel to sit around doing nothing for 95% of it's lifetime.
I'd like to believe a "rentier" future will empower renters with even cheaper options due to efficiency of utility. As you say, having a big chunk of capability sit there most of the time is wasteful in a sense.
However it also feels like it entrenches the rich with further options of rent-seeking.
And it doesn't take much cynicism to think that any benefits due to efficient use of resources will go to the owners pocket, not the customer/renter.

What if it crashes into someone, wouldn't you be responsible then?
Would you buy a car that throws you over a cliff to avoid ploughing through 20 kids running stupidly onto the road?
I mean, in theory the autonomous driving will be good enough to protect both. But a similar scenario will come up somewhere/sometime and what is the correct answer? What do you program the car to do?

For an Iphone you pay $800, get only 64GB SSD with about 50GB usable which will run out in a matter of months. Then you pay Apple $3 every month until eternity just to be able to use your phone, otherwise it will fill up and even non-apple services will fail to backup (eg, Whatsapp).
For future cars you will pay $30k for the car, which does not have radio, drive assist, etc. And you pay $2 every month to unlock the radio, $2 to unlock the Bluetooth, $2 to unlock the voice control, $2 for climate control, $10 for drive assists, and so on. Keep paying otherwise these basic features will become locked and the hardware you paid for will become less useful.
