This would be ideal for myself.

I spend $1500/year on insurance and about $1000 in gas on a car I barely ever drive.

I am slow to get ready and leave the house as well.

If this thing could just show up at my doorstep and drive me to the grocery store and back every couple of weeks for a few dollars that would be incredible!

Plus I don't have to make smalltalk with a driver, bonus!

Not to mention the space I would save in my garage.

An hour can move you 60 miles on the highway, which is likely at least 2 gallons of gas. So gas would be $6-8. $8.50 seems like a great deal.

Uhm, it says "access the features". I presume you own the car, have insurance, pay for gas and then also pay for the software "driver".

Earlier quoted context omitted.

How about to use the internet? Or to use the smartphone you already paid for? Attempts at renting your own hardware back to you should be rejected on sight.

I would compare it with the apps on my iPhone like Netflix.

Considering software like that will always need further development, I'm not objecting to have it as an optional subscription and the price sounds reasonable to me. I would use it. Not for every small trip to the store, but for longer trips definitely.

That being said I think this would lead to more hardware, not just software, being locked behind subscriptions - as the article already mentions battery range/performance subscription. Simply because the companies are greedy. That's something that I would refuse to pay for via subscription.

If you don't have to also buy the car, this might be reasonable

I was going to say, $8.50/hour autonomous Uber sounds amazing. $50 to get from the bay area to Mt. Shasta.

But if you have to own the car, fuck that. If you own it you should own access to all features that the hardware is capable of.
