By that argument the UK could re annex parts of France and the USA. And Italy could take back large chunks of the near east.

Conversely, if not for that argument, China would be a hodgepodge of local warlords (what it was post Qing, before ROC's unification). A problem of claims by irredentism is what time period do you consider the proper extent of a nation's territory? This applies to both the rationalisation of Tibet belonging to China, and for not belonging.

Good question.

If you can't force the issue (i.e Yugoslavia, Kosovo, Cyprus, Crimea) via a force of arms or diplomacy.

I wanted to write "sad day for Hong Kong", but I realized it's been more like a sad year and a half for HK, if not longer. One wonders how long can CCP keep doing the same thing again and again. I guess we shall see. My heart goes to those in HK.

The liberal open Hong Kong we used to know has died in 2020, the year they passed the national security law. Elites and professionals in Hong Kong are thinking where to move their families to and those chose to stay have to accept they are now no difference than an ordinary mainland Chinese citizen. CCP did not and will not keep any of their promises. All the Sino-UK agreement and the promise of 'One country Two syst…

Why is the CCP "evil"? What have they done? You might disagree with the philosophy of their political party, but they are not invading other countries like we do, they don't torture innocent people who have never had a trial on Guantanamo Bay, they don't send drones over innocent villages ripping children and women into pieces over false claims of mass destruction weapons, they don't write offensive tweets like Ameri…

Ugh, please! If this ( https://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-china-55794071 ) is not a definition of evil, I don't know what is. Heinous crimes that go all the way to the CCP top .

I think you're in the wrong thread? This is pretty off-topic? This article is about China. If you're looking for one about Iraq, for example, there's plenty: https://hn.algolia.com/?dateRange=all&page=0&prefix=false&qu... Unless your intent was to do nothing but shout "А у вас негров линчуют" https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/And_you_are_lynching_Negroes The link and its content are meant to be the overall topic.

Apologies, dang. That was certainly not my intention.

If my friends are any indication, most would be hesitant to move to the US due to physical safety issues in American streets.

From what I can tell, most HKers are looking at Canada, UK or Australia. I haven't really heard anyone talking about moving to the US.

Compared to the U.S., anti-Asian sentiment is actually worse in Canada and Australia right now by some objective measures, according to a talk I attended yesterday by Dr. Russell Jeung (Asian-American Studies). He didn't mention the U.K.

That said, it makes sense that someone from a city-state that was formerly part of the british commonwealth would want to move (back) to the commonwealth.

One example: the higher education systems within the commonwealth are more interlinked and university degrees more widely recognised across borders. I'm sure there are many more benefits as well.

People have never been china, talks like a china/CCP expert.

You don’t need to have been to China to know that Tibet and Hong Kong share a similar fate.

Hong Kong will fall because China can’t allow it the freedom it needs to operate. The intellectual and financial capital that hasn’t already departed will exfiltrate and all that will remain are CCP party faithful who never had the skills or motivation to succeed the way the original companies did.

The outside world will see the same Hong Kong names but those will be preserved hides over an eaten-out corpse.

ROC took over the assets and liabilities of the qing, just like russia did with the soviet union

So Tibet belongs to the ROC and the mainlanders have no rights to it... Interesting.

PRC, ROC and Tibet can claim all the rights it wants, but buddy, you have to back it up militarily and politically.
