Tried it on Arch with i3 a year (maybe more) ago. Wasn't really usable back then, switched back to X11. For embedded applications I'd probably start with Wayland, but yeah, for my host machine I'm not motivated enough to be more than a mere user.

The 'wayland sucks' movement is sooo annoying, even to me and I'm just a happy wayland user and haven't spent any of my free time writing those thousands of lines of code.
It's one of the reasons I love stale closing bots. I don't have to pay attention to people who are dicks. I can just unsubscribe from their issues and let a bot handle it.

Standing as an outside observer, usually when someone posts about progress on Wayland they are immediately greeted by "Well, I don't like it." "That sucks" "just use X" etc. I've seen that sometimes here, although it's more frequent on Reddit.
I mean, that's just internet in general, isn't it?
I try to not contribute, but even knowing about the problem I catch myself - it seems to be human nature.
Wayland is being treated like PulseAudio and systemd before. So, it will probably win its battle, thanks $DEITY.

i3 is a X11 window manager and has no Wayland support at all.
Sway is a Wayland compositor that closely resembles i3.

I'm not a user of X11 or Wayland, not really. I just picked a DE that I liked. I guess my choice puts me firmly in the anti-Wayland camp though since I won't be running it anytime soon.
As they just released 4.16 last month, we should see an announcement regarding dependencies for 4.18 anytime now.
