Ok, since the rt.com article appears to be the canonical source, we changed the URL from https://www.thesanfranciscotelegraph.com/technology/3678/in-... to that. Edit: actually there are lots of media articles about this story. I've changed the URL from https://www.rt.com/news/513966-spotify-monitor-emotions-pate... , to https://www.bbc.com/news/entertainment-arts-55839655 , which is one of the more substantial ones.

https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=25985491

I looked at that one too but BBC's seemed more informative.

How do we make it less scary?

Start working on your own alternative platform. You, as a hacker, have a responsibility to your community, family, friends, to build an alternative platform for them. If you refuse this responsibility, you are failing your own family and community, and leaving them to suffer all the consequences. You can't realistically tell your family to quit Service X, no matter how fucking bad it is, unless you're willing to prov…

It's reassuring to find someone who shares this sentiment. I hope people are starting to see the high cost that convenient services inevitably incur. Now we simply need the tools for individuals and small groups to cheaply create this alt-software.

I don't understand this business model. How does taking podcasts (something people are used to getting for free with few or no ads) and breaking the currently open ecosystem there is around them benefit anyone, least of all Spotify themselves?

> podcasts (something people are used to getting for free with few or no ads ) This is an inaccurate assumption is how. Podcasts are audio adverts with interesting segments haha. Ok maybe not that bad, but it's nowhere near 'few or no ads'

I listen to about ~15 podcasts. All of them have maybe a single 1-2min plug at the beginning, and maybe another at the end. All of them are about 30min or more.

I'd definitely qualify the worst case of 28 out of 30 minutes being actual content to be "few or no ads".

.. of your selection haha. There's a few more than ~15 podcasts out there these days.

The thing they have that lets you change device within the app was absolutely flawless for me until a few months ago I'd be happy with them just not breaking the things that work.

or removing their best features. You used to be able to long press on a song and it would play the hook of the song. It was a great way to get the general feel of a playlist. They randomly removed it 3 or 4 years ago because supposedly no one used it

Yes! They removed that on purpose? I thought it broke haha. I was still waiting for it to come back!

I'm almost certain it didn't work on my friend's android when we tried it too. Also I'm pretty sure I discovered it by accident one day.

Huh nobody is using this feature we've never mentioned and only exists on one platform. Sometimes Spotify comes off as just completely daft.

Sure, it's obviously anecdotal. I still don't have any tangible example of podcasts being ad-ridden as a general rule...
