I think more students need to study how the Nazis came to power; while violent attempts were made (Beer Hall Putsch) and low level political violence between various political factions, the Nazis did not gain power through those acts. Rather a slow burn, leveraging the democratic process in the Wiemar Republic. Violence now, but these people might eventually get it together and use the democratic political process to…

Are you unironically contesting that popular social media was used to organize riots and massive property damage last summer?
> Are you unironically contesting that popular social media was used to organize No, everything must be organized, I get that. > riots and massive property damage last summer? I'm asking for a source regarding the accusation that they were used to "burn down parts of Minneapolis, Chicago, and LA" And before you ask, yeah, I take issue with the idea of most of those events being called "riots" - they were almost entir…
Ah right, so the ends justify the means. It is OK to vandalise and destroy a small business if you feel bad and frustrated, but only if you share the corporate-approved politically correct opinion. Do you not see where this road ends?

#273Suddenly half the population is realizing the cons of centralized platforms. Curious if this moment sparks renewed interest in decentralized tech of yesteryear ie the good ol world wide web.
I do agree with you, though keep in mind that the previous version of the web worked great when it was run by engineers (that cared about silly things like freedom of speech) and not valueless executives.
We were pretty centralised around a few locations like slashdot & newsgroups.
Walled gardens were a thing, here in the UK a service called CIX was popular but AOL is the big famous one.
It’s not that we communicated less, group messaging with non-techie friends was done over email - cue flashback to 300-message deep top-posted replies.
It’s not that we were better in any way, the anarchist’s cookbook cost many a high school several new sets of door locks. Back orifice was a thing and was used for real scummy purposes sometimes.
I landed at profit motive as the difference. Just before the era of spyware is where i’m thinking it fell apart but I’m not at all confident in my assessment.

Further escalation beyond storming the capitol? Becuase that's what tolerance has resulted in.
Exactly. Remember when this was OK? https://twitter.com/MSNBC/status/1047935416182235136?s=19
- What the pro-Trump crowd did on 2021-01-06 at the capitol building is essentially the same as what the anti-Kavanaugh crowd did on 2018-10-04 at the Hart Senate Office Building.
- And so, the actions themselves have not escalated; what has escalated is our sensitivity to them in that we no longer deem them as "OK".
? Or am I totally misreading you? Because if I understood you correctly, um, see what 'benmaraschino wrote.

#275There's an amusing irony in the downvotes in this thread. The champions of free-speech angry that Apple might ban a platform for speech that ultimately led to an attempted insurrection? These champions of free speech seem to be agressively trying to silence anybody happy about this news.

#276I don't understand what people don't get about the 1st amendment. A right to free speech, is set in stone in the US Constitution, a private company can enforce their own censorship, but having a company that wants to have the 1st amendment and is being forced to be shut down is not what the US is about. Threats and actions to commit treason should be handled by authorities and prosecuted. But someone saying they don'…

#277hardcore leftists weren't using twitter and other platforms to incite violence?

you're making the incorrect assumption that both sides of the discourse have valid positions. 1. what is a non-racist person supposed to say to a racist person to change their views? 2. why is it the non-racist person's responsibility to talk to the racist person? in the words of office space, "why should I change? he's the one who sucks."
Let’s not assume that one “side” is racist and the other isn’t. It’s both wrong and unproductive.
Racists do exist in considerable numbers and post prolifically online, so what should non-racists say to people like that?

> Their legal cases are rejected. The mainstream media refuses to take them seriously. Well these last two seem pretty par for the course for illegitimate claims been promoted as legitimate. At a certain point the line of absurdity has been crossed at it is not the duty of society to constantly debunk illegitimate claims. > The other side keeps deplatforming them In this particular case, Parler has been host to a num…
Yes, that is what reddit, twitter and Hacker News reinforce constantly. It's either because it's true, or because the other side has been repeatedly discouraged from adding their two cents in those communities. I've been seeing the world through this lens for so long that I can't tell. I find it somewhat implausible that half the population is dumb, racist and all those other labels. It seems much more likely that I…
Censorship has always struck me as a tool that a side which isn't confident in its arguments uses.

They are spewing a constant stream of hatred and disinformation. Nothing of value was lost here.
I couldn't tell, since what they have to say never reaches my feed. However I've been reading comments like yours across every platform for over a decade. At some point I'm not sure if they're really all that, or if I was just conditioned to believe that, and to leave them out of the conversation.
