Restricting peoples access to an app in the app store that is also a website is... an exercise in futility.

What it does do is further back the extremists idea that they are being marginalized by big tech while others aren't. It is another step of divisiveness that leads to MORE of what just happened on Wednesday.

I'm not saying the content of Parler is at all appropriate or that people should be able to call for violence and not be punished. Violence is not the answer, but neither is further disenfranchising people and pushing us further apart.

Facebook makes far too much money showing ads to their "more conservative user base" to do anything more than token gestures to stop racism and calls to violence.

Let’s be real, they profited massively off the Russian conspiracy hoax as well. They make money when you’re mad and engaged

What Russian conspiracy hoax are you referring to? I do hope you are not calling the well-understood interference by Russia in the democratic affairs of other nations a hoax but instead referring to something else. The Russian plan to destabilise the west is published in a book since 1997.

Someone brought an interesting perspective in another thread and I can't shake it off. The other side keeps deplatforming them. Their legal cases are rejected. The mainstream media refuses to take them seriously. We're not even listening to them, because it's science and they're *ists if they disagree. We're not debating anymore. We just assume we're right. We are slowly squeezing a significant segment of the populat…

They are spewing a constant stream of hatred and disinformation. Nothing of value was lost here.

I couldn't tell, since what they have to say never reaches my feed. However I've been reading comments like yours across every platform for over a decade.

At some point I'm not sure if they're really all that, or if I was just conditioned to believe that, and to leave them out of the conversation.

Further escalation beyond storming the capitol? Becuase that's what tolerance has resulted in.

This is extraordinarily tame in the scheme of American history. And as someone who lives in one of those areas of the country constantly scorned, belittled, and caricatured, I can say with confidence that you do not want those people to act in kind to Antifa. There's been a lot of living vicariously through Antifa/BLM lately with portions of society that want to "stand for something." It's the same mentality as peopl…

There is nothing at all patriotic about what these people did. There is nothing peaceful about what happened this week.

These people demand Constitutional rights while trampling all over that very document.

They are not “patriots,” they are traitors.

Parler, which is outwardly pro-free speech, aggressively removes any non-right-wing discourse on its platform and shadowbans topics from search and feeds. At the same time, they do not moderate threats of violence or plans to commit those acts of violence (which we've witnessed come to fruition this week). At what point do we stop calling Parler a platform for free speech and admit that it is actively breeding violence?

If I release a messaging app on the app store and call it a tool for free speech, but block any content that doesn't have to do with committing acts of violence against members of congress, what argument is there for not blocking my app?

Any discussions about the merits of free speech around Apple and Parler here are largely moot: none of the parties involved here truly value "free as in freedom" speech and never have. The pot and the kettle are arguing about which one is blacker.

A fairly famous italian band[1] has a line in one of their songs which I cannot shake off me: > Mi sono rotto il cazzo che non sono d’accordo con te / ma morirei affinché tu possa dire la tua stronzata which translates to: > I’m fucking sick of the fact that I do not agree with you / but I would die for you to be able to express your bullshits. "I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it" - from Evelyn Beatrice Hall in her book: The Friends of Voltaire. The quote is an illustration of Voltaire's beliefs.

Unfortunately, I think this is only the beginning. The Trump era was just a warm-up.

The only chance in hell this country has of surviving is if Republicans widely condemn Trump's behavior and make an example of other agitators like Rudy Giuliani and Alex Jones who whipped these people into a frenzy. If there are no consequences, they'll only get the message that they can do whatever they want and things will only get worse.

If the agitators are not imprisoned for a long time, there will be no chance for peace in this country. And any insurrectionists storming government buildings must be shot on sight next time, as the combatants they are. Wouldn't shed a tear, the alternative is to become another Afghanistan.

The fake Thomas Paines here need to understand that we are at WAR. If you care about this country, this shit has to be put down mercilessly.

I mean, that's just rewording Evelyn Hall's restatement of Voltaire, isn't it?

I don't understand what people don't get about the 1st amendment. A right to free speech, is set in stone in the US Constitution, a private company can enforce their own censorship, but having a company that wants to have the 1st amendment and is being forced to be shut down is not what the US is about. Threats and actions to commit treason should be handled by authorities and prosecuted. But someone saying they don'…

"But someone saying they don't believe the election results should not be silenced. Its their right to free speech and the US constitution guarantees it."

This isn't right.

1) This is not about people disputing the election results. That happens in plain day on new News and other places and it's uncensored. The current concern is about inciting violence, talking about kidnapping people on capitol hill etc..

2) There is really no '1st Amendment' argument on any of these platforms, it literally doesn't apply. You don't have any right whatsoever to say anything via Apple's App Store, or on Parler. It's entirely up to them and the 1st Amendment has nothing to do with it. Those platforms deal in content, so they can do as they please - for better or for worse.

"The whole reason you had a bunch of desperate crazies storming congress is an extreme effort to silence speech"

Again - this is completely upside down.

The President using the legitimate authority of his office to spread outright lies in the face of all evidence is what is 'causing the problem'.

The fact we have 1000 different ways to communicate with each other and amplify misinformation is enabling much of this to take place in the commons - not the other way around.

It's completely disingenuous to suggest that the 'lack of information on Facebook and Twitter' is somehow 'the problem' when it's Trump's usage of said platforms to spread absolutely false information that is driving people to anger.

FYI - you can say anything you want about 'election fraud' on Twitter, FB, in the news, on so many platforms and nobody will bother with you.

We need integrity in all of our systems.

That said it'd be better if large corporations were not having to wade in with policy.

> The only chance in hell this country has of surviving is if Republicans widely condemn Trump's behavior Trump acted like a clown, but he's hardly the only agitator in this mess. The entirety of 2020 has been a shit show from all sides, and near as I can tell no one is interested in backing down.

I keep hearing this argument, to which I have to answer: at no point, ever, in 2020 or 2021 did the other side - which you are trying to equate with Trump - organize an attack on the United States Congress while the totality of our elected officials were in session.

Trying to equate people rioting on the streets with an organized pseudo-coup-by-proxy is ridiculous and it just sounds like you are trying to give one side an excuse by using whataboutism.
