To be fair, YouTube doesn't run on Linux anyway, it crawls, unless you happen the have the magical combination of proper drivers.

My point exactly. How can we expect tiny cheap linux computers like the PI to replace PCs for the average joe if they can't even run Youtube? Unless the hardware powers datacenters or mobile/IoT devices, HW manufacturers don't even bother supporting linux with drivers.

They can, just not with any Linux, exactly due to drivers.

Put into them a custom closed OEM distribution, or the Windows for the Pi, and there is no issue playing YouTube with proper hardware acceleration.

> Google has been steadily moving things into play services though, which is not open. This is a good thing, they've been de-googling the base OS and making it as stripped down and bare-bones as possible. This is a huge win for security, privacy, and freedom in general, and exactly what they should be doing. Android should be a small, secure Linux based operating system with an API that makes it easy to build service…

Fair enough, but android without play services is also barely usable and most apps will not run. It's also an effective way of building the walls around the garden.

which makes me wonder why amazon or facebook haven't started leading an open-source alternative to google play services.

It's such an easy way to run the mobile race compared to start ing from scratch.

I bet if we do a demographic IP check that is what most HN logins come from. I surely do, whatever Porsche and Ferrari do have very little repercussions on the automotive market, if you want a comparison.

This circular logic is more disingenuous noise (the userbase of HN is utterly irrelevant given that you're trying to prove your own absurd claim that only HN cares, when clearly the entire developed world cares). How are you not moderated down to transparent by now? [I will tell you why - because the title draws in a certain crowd that is comforted by your nonsense, however fictional it is] Whatever you hope the posi…

There's a simple metric you are missing: installed base.

There are 4 billion active smartphones, Tim Cook said iPhones are ~900 million

Let's make it a billion for simplicity.

1 - 3 out of 4 smartphones are not Apple's

2 - Apple makes up 50% of the US market for installed base, it's around 220 million devices, 22% of its global installed base, 5% of the global market. Android is the other 50%, 7% of Android global, 5% of the global market. So Apple is 3 times more reliant on US market than Android.

3 - Apple makes 41% of their revenues in USA

International sales accounted for 59 percent of the quarter's revenue.Oct 29, 2020

https://www.apple.com/newsroom/2020/10/apple-reports-fourth-...

So more or less we can say that every iPhone sold in USA is worth 3 times an iPhone sold internationally, out of $100 of revenue 1 iPhone in USA is worth $41 one sold internationally is worth 59/4=~$14.5.

That's not in absolute numbers, there are other factors contributing to Apple revenues but it's a good proxy. An iPhone sold in USA generates more revenues overall, being it Apple Store, accessories, laptops, cloud services, music, ...

Android market is harder to analyse being more fragmented, but there are a few key points that can be extracted.

Only 7% of the global Android market is in USA.

Google doesn't make much money from Android, Apple is absolute king of profits here, they are able to extract much more.

Largest Android manufacturers are not in USA and that's a reason why in Asia people are switching to locally manufactured devices that can rival with iPhones in term of perceived usefulness at half the price.

Apple has a minimal penetration in emerging markets, like for example Africa.

We can conclude that what Apple does is still much more relevant in USA and USA is much more relevant for Apple than any other smartphone manufacturer.

Ask yourself this question: what would have happened to the market if the M1 was made by Microsoft or Dell/HP/Lenovo?

How many more companies would have considered it if it could run Windows out of the box.

That's how relevant Apple is in the global market, it's king of profits, it's king of market capitalisation, it makes very good high end devices but as far as the general population is concerned, the M1 won't change much outside of the US.

It's more like 25% and dropping In Italy iPhones used to be 50% of the market, because they were a status symbol and it was literally the only smartphone available, ten years after they have dropped below 24% globally, but new sells are much less, because The number of people buying their first iPhone is declining. Apple's annual Worldwide Developers Conference this week wi…

Whatever, keep inside your happy bubble if it makes you happy. Personal attacks are a sign of lack of proper arguments.

You disputed actual metrics around the world with your own anecdote. The only possibility is that you don't travel or are a liar. That's just reality, not an insult. The sign of a lack of proper arguments is when you have to spin a fiction to contrive a position, which every post you've offered up to this discussion has been. The moment someone pulls the "only the US cares" (or, in your case, only HN cares apparently…

Why is dang allowing this person to bully everyone?

Is this the new normal on HN?

> Apple -- at 20% or so in most of the world's economies Apple has 17% (and dropping) of the mobile market share in Europe and around 9% in computing. There aren't many other richer economies in the World. Ferrari is worth now more than General Motors and Ford, so market share and net worth are not comparable. Their market share is small because they make a luxury limited edition product. They limit their production…

This is so intensely boring and stupid. Firstly, you profoundly misunderstood the inclusion of Ferrari, hilariously trying to twist that into an Apple critique. Secondly, Apple is selling as many or more iPhones than ever in Europe (19% in the EU). And Japan. And the US. And Canada. And Australia. And CHINA . And Singapore. And South Korea. Literally every rich area on Earth. Contrasted with pjmlp's "only the US" (ac…

> Seems Apple have time this perfectly for their transition Important to note that this doesn't really apply to Apple Silicon. Rosetta II isn't X86 emulation, it's a translation layer - big technical difference.

Rosetta runs emulation, it's just that part of it is a ahead-of-time translator.

AFAIK even the dynamic parts are translating whole code pages rather than emulating them.

Bootcamp doesn't run on ARM Macs so your point is moot.

That's not really because Apple hates allowing you to install Windows, but rather because you can't actually acquire a Windows for ARM license. Once again, Apple has stated that Bootcamp for Apple Silicon is "up to Microsoft". And ARM Macs are still just a minority of the computers that Apple sells. The rest have Bootcamp, which allows you to just turn your Mac into a Windows machine. Saying that "Apple will never al…

> You might as well argue how Bootcamp doesn't run on iPads.

This isn't much of a "gotcha" - I do think it's outrageous that Apple gets away with selling these gimped iOS devices that only run Apple-approved software.

Would consumers stand for this with any other devices? A stapler where you had to buy staples from the manufacturer? A car that only drives on manufacturer-approved roads? A dishwasher that will only wash approved plates?

Hehe, true! Cubicles are much better from a privacy perspective, but the startup kids tore them down on the dubious pretext of hindering collaboration. It was only a matter of time before BigCos followed suit, if only for the obvious cost saving reasons.

I don't mind open offices for the 5 man starups made of the guys who met in college and are trying their luck with blood sweat and tears, however I really do mind them in the nouveau wannabe pseudo startups where it's an open chicken coop for the developer plebs and private offices for the sales/marketing/management. But it's ok, they give you a ping pong and foosball table. /s

Let’s hope that the pandemic kills the open office!
