China is where the USA was in the 1950s; lots of industrial growth but lots of pollutions, a population happy about all the new wealth and not willing to protest.

When did protest start to become common in the states?

Well in 1688 Quakers in America protested against slavery. 1773: Boston Tea Party. Temperance in the 1800's. Women's Vote in 1913.

But they entered the public awareness in 1963 with the March on Washington, and haven't let up since.

Strange how putrid governments find members of society happy to oppress other members of the society. Such as those soldiers happily waiting to execute orders against the freedoms of their fellow citizens.

You should read Ordinary Men [1] sometime. All humans have the capacity for evil which is why we must stay vigilant.

From the description:

Browning argues that most of the men of RPB 101 were not fanatical Nazis but, rather, ordinary middle-aged, working-class men who committed these atrocities out of a mixture of motives, including the group dynamics of conformity, deference to authority, role adaptation, and the altering of moral norms to justify their actions.

Just a side note: 1. Hong Kong, at least on paper, is ruled by a governing entity elected by Hong Kong people. Mainland party hasn’t acted yet because, again, on paper, this is a Hong Kong issue. But things could get messy when Hong Kong government cries for help 2. The protest started when a bill that many feared could be used to target and deport anti-China citizens. Hong Kong government was quick to withdrawn and…

The pictures we're seeing is of cops beating, rubber-shooting and tear-gassing protesters in tight spaces without obvious provocation.

Here are videos of protestors beating cops and other innocent bystanders,

If you have a better memory, this is how it was: 1. Local police was sent, it either did nothing or deserted 2. Troops from BJ itself were sent in, largely the same happened 3. Liaoning military region troops were called, they fared just a bit better than BJ troops, made few attack attempts, but nevertheless withdrew 4. Finally, as Beijing was getting more and more desperate, Shaanxi military region troops - "the pri…

And if it turns out (because times have changed) they no longer have enough "primitives" to do their dirty work for them - combined with all the cameras running, these days - What then?

> And if it turns out (because times have changed) they no longer have enough "primitives" to do their dirty work for them

It has always been the case that the powerful squash uprisings by getting half the poor to kill the other half this has been the case regardless of the country for thousands of years, to think otherwise is naive.

> combined with all the cameras running

They killed protestors in Tiananmen square precisely because it was in front of cameras so the world would know the lengths they would goto in order to maintain power. China has never faced any negative consequences for the massacre because every one got the message.

Returning GIs from WW2 protested, resulting in the GI bill.

Women protested in the 1910s for the right to votes.

My guess is it’s an industrial revolution side effect, but would be love to learn of earlier roots.

Don’t think France “mostly waited it out” when there has been more injured yellow vests than HKers so far: 2 more or less connected deaths, 1 person lost lower arm, and at least 24 lost an eye, including one of the most pacific yellow vest leader Jerome Rodrigues https://www.cnn.com/2019/07/14/europe/france-bastille-day-in... In many ways, french police did repress protesters in a much more brutal way than HK police…

That's a very biased take on what happened in France. The protesters were burning cars and destroying public and private property to vast extents, besides throwing Molotov cocktails at the police. The yellow vests went way, way beyond their right to protest. https://www.aa.com.tr/en/europe/-yellow-vest-protests-grow-v... https://www.buzzfeednews.com/article/ryanhatesthis/yellow-ve... https://www.bbc.com/news/world-eu…

I live in France, and I must say I am offended by your comment!

People burning cars and destroying property are not yellow vests, they are antifa groups and their job is to bring chaos to discredit the yellow vests movement.

Assuming that a powerful nation has not deeply owned every large-scale protest is in my experience extremely naive. Either the protest has no teeth or it's penetrated all the way to the top with either government agents or extensive surveillance. This means that action outside of what the government feels like dealing with means arrests (no matter how temporary) and that any action that is taken means that the govern…

If you really know this for a fact, you should contact https://www.nytimes.com/tips But I'm guessing by 'fact' you mean 'I'm very convinced of my own opinions'.

I don't live in the United States, I do know it for a fact and I will not sabotage my own life or those of the people I care about just because you would love to read some drama in the papers. The net result of that would be that in a month or two nobody would remember it, and lives would still be ruined.

It is almost mystifyingly selfish of you to ask this of me, especially when you souse it with your fairly hostile closing remark.

If what you say is true, about simmering discontent in HK due to conditions worse than in China. Why don't the HK people just move to China? Are there any rules against that? If not, why are they staying in HK?

Let me clear one thing people in Hong Kong are in China. Hong Kong is China with few exceptions of basic law. For your question moving between cities anywhere is hard. Moreover most population in Hong Kong is not that well educated to get better paying jobs as locals have better university education and good English knowledge in tier 1 cities. People live in Hong Kong as they don't have a choice or skills or resource…

It's been almost 4 weeks of regular HN posting since you've made a comment that wasn't politically charged or that mentions China. What gives, this doesn't seem like a normal account.

protests have been going on in the us for a long time, for example the labor movement in early 20th century

but probably what you are referring to is post world war 2, which mostly started in the 1960s caused by the vietnam war and civil rights movements brought about by myriad causes (middle class affluence, mass communications, overextending of the govt overseas (and at home with the draft etc))

wikipedia, but it’s as god a place to start as any[1]

Isn't this happening in Hong Kong as well? Destroying properties, and especially Molotov cocktails.
