I think bicycling was really not relevant, because the peasants would probably rather take a mule or a wagon to carry stuff around and the aristocrats would rather take a comfortable carriage. There was basically no rich middle class which had the time and money to fool around with individual transportation, and the other classes had either no real reason to want this or it was pure luxury.

Googling “bicycles in Africa” gives me plenty of examples of peasants who, I guess, would rather use a mule or wagon, but cannot afford one, and are much helped with a bicycle.

I also would think such people existed elsewhere in the world centuries ago.

Skating was a thing long before cycling was. With enough forward momentum one can go quite far balanced on one ice-skate.

Cost of ownership is nuts. My car basically just sits, but I have to pay $1000 a year just to keep it legal. My bike was $50. And that was it.

It's not that hard to unicycle. It just seems so to people who didn't try it until they were an adult.

In Japan, any junior high school may have a few unicycles and you frequently see kids larking around on them in the playground. Nothing special.

I don't think the modern two wheeled in-line design is an obvious starting point or design iteration. It's not obviously user friendly either. Proof: 90% of the people reading this thread probably had to be "taught" how to ride a two wheeled bicycle.

Bamboo, maybe, although the joints would have been very difficult and you still have the problem of bearings and other moving interfaces.

I don't have a source, and maybe I'm misremembering, but I think compilers (for software) and CPU production tooling (for hardware) both bootstrap off their own performance.

A better compiler can compile itself more efficiently, same for CPU/chip layout systems.
