Are they trying to promote Firefox or something? Chrome seems to be trying quite hard to annoy people enough to actually uninstall it.
Worked for me. Switched to FF because I just can't trust Chrome anymore. FF feels like a breath of fresh air.

The firefox that keeps doing experiements and jokes on their users by installing random extensions without asking? Until some weeks ago I was less unhappy with Google Chrome than with firefox, but now I am kind of almost equal unhappy with both...
IIRC, Firefox did that once , and then apologized. Unlike Google, who keeps doing the same thing all the time.
Just got the update at work, and miraculously my uBlock adblocking extension was removed and DuckDuckGo as the default search engine replaced with Google. Looks like all my customizations were replaced by defaults. Now I'm wondering whether it was our IT's fault or due to Google actions.

Qwant is worse then Google, but better then Bing or DDG. Try it.
DDG has improved substantially recently. I've had some technical search queries that gave me 2-3 results on DDG, and when I used the !g bang to lookup in Google, I got a "no results" page. =P
It's not as good at finding obscure forum posts related to a query however
My best guess that Chrome works this way would be due to combining the sign-in cookies with the general cookies of the browser (e.g. 1 cookie store instead of 2).
So when you log in to Google, you log in to Chrome - and vice versa. For non-technical users this is a convenience feature, though for many it does come with privacy concerns.
Judging by the comments re cookie clearing, there is some part of the login still separate from that, but as it re-establishes itself the cookies come back and you stay logged-in to Google.
Is this perhaps preventable by having a "Guest" Chrome account? What happens then?

It isn’t even open-source, I don’t see how it’s much better than Google Analytics. Piwik is a popular open-source alternative.

Are you really comparing a software developer completing tickets based on requirements to Nazis being told to kill? The fact that you need to draw that comparison tells me you are going overboard.
I’m comparing the argument that the Google engineer is just following orders to the argument that camp guards were just following orders.
I’m not the one who brought up the exact same defense. But if that defence is brought up, Perhaps the person emplying that argument should be asked if they meant to make the comparison indirectly by using the same argument.

I'm sure Microsoft had the same reasoning about IE.
IE lost users because it was abysmal. And the reason for that was they wanted to keep people on the desktop. Who knows... if IE was already as good as early Chrome, perhaps there would be no Chrome.
Chrome 69 on Mac puts Close/Minimise/Maximise buttons in an additional bar when in fullscreen mode. It's super irritating to see an additional bar when you move mouse to top of screen.
