Wow, they are DEPRECATING OpenGL from both macOS and iOS: https://developer.apple.com/macos/whats-new/ This is in addition to last year's announcement that "macOS High Sierra is the last version of macOS to run 32bit apps without compromise " I wonder if we will soon see a new lineage of Macbooks fitted with Apple-specific arm64 chips. The most scary thought is if UIKit-on-macOS starts requiring Developer ID entitlem…

And OpenCL too. This is terrible. I was thinking about adding GPU support to a numerical simulator I am working on, and I was planning to have nice cross-platform support with OpenCL. Whelp, that's no longer the case. My code is in C++, and I refuse to use proprietary, vendor-locked, Objective-C-only Metal. If people want GPU support, they'll just have to use Linux, which doesn't artificially constrain you with corpo…

Does this imply Apple is planning to continue support for OpenGL informally/externally, the way that X Window support is through xQuartz, perhaps via an external Mesa-based library?

And maybe the same informal/external support model for OpenCL?

Performance will be diminished but not extinguished.

More like: No...t yet

On stage Craig answers the question “will macOS and iOS merge” with a big NO, at least for as long as the guy is still with Apple.

>at least for as long as the guy is still with Apple.

This is nothing new. They've said things on stage that they've literally reversed on a year later.

I'm not sure what I'm expecting to be honest, but I never use any of the in-built macOS apps so I just skim over those announcements. They don't seem like they should be part of what's considered the OS.

Totally agree - and from a tech point I imagine they probably don't require a new OS (perhaps in most cases).

However I imagine it's probably a good way to get people to stay up to date with the latest OS: "Oh, I want that shiny new app, I must update"

Somehow this is directly related to the failure of desktop Linux.

The only successful variants of it, actually do constrain devs with either Web or Java corporate frameworks, with a very tiny subset of native code allowed to take part into the whole game.

What's the consensus on Metal? How does it compare to OpenGL?

Most of the game devs I follow on Twitter expressed a positive opinion on Metal, particularly over Kronos' Vulkan and of course everyone(that actually has to develop with it) hates OpenGL.

So how far are away from the macOS iOS merge? A Stocks app as an OS-level feature feels pretty darn close.

They explicitly answered this exact question with a resounding “No.”

Which means they aren't doing it now, not that they aren't doing it ever. Apple publicly derided phones with large screens for years and then released their own.

> DEPRECATING OpenGL Wow, does this mean Maya, Houdini, and basically every 3D package out there will no longer run on macOS? If so that seriously sucks for 3D pros.

Won't there just be OpenGL drivers as a separate download? Is this any different than when they removed Java?

The name is unfortunately shared with the ill-fated marketing campaign from Microsoft to tell people Vista wasn't a hot pile of garbage. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ihorvo2tEuA

Yeah, Apple has "reinvigorated" old terminology many many times.

It goes along with the "Places in CA" theme Cook introduced, and, honestly, honeybadger don't give a shit.

Always interesting to see the divergence between HN and what the average user cares about. For most people emojis (and animojis) have opened a whole new way to communicate with each other. I can't think of another linguistic feature in history which saw such widespread use within a decade and I feel like emojis don't get enough credit for that.

How is an emoji a whole new way to communicate? EDIT: I meant this as a genuine question, not as a "how could you possibly think this" response.

A friend asked if he could crash at my place one night and said “don’t worry if not, I got options” followed by the nail-painting emoji.

How do you express that in ASCII emoticons?
