You're absolutely correct... I am making this post from a PowerBook G4 running MacOS 9. The entirety of the OS including the window manager etc. is currently using 80MB. How much RAM are the various Gnome 3 daemons and window manager taking up?

Even accounting for some bloating because of X11's more chatty protocol and network independence, does it make sense to take up 3x of MacOS9 with Finder interface RAM usage?

For the record, Arch Linux has to have the best, thorough documentation I've ever read.

I personally prefer Slackware's as far as "official" or "semi-official" documentation goes, but I refer to the Arch wiki pretty frequently even though I haven't used Arch at all in the last 5 years.

OpenBSD's manpages are also remarkably comprehensive, and they're available without an Internet connection. Pretty fantastic if you're using OpenBSD for your gateway and fucked up your PF configuration :)

That is a deliberate mischaracterization of the OP's comment. It in no way implies that the software is poor because of women. The outreach program is political, and is rather discriminatory and sexist.

Your analogy makes no sense to me. When evaluating applicants, the only metrics used should be how well the applicant can do his or her job.

Giving applicants preference for having some blessed sex or political leanings is generally a recipe for disaster.

Totally disagree. I was a mac user for 10 years before finally making the switch this year to Arch, and Gnome is definitely the most polished DE option I found. All software has warts, but I haven't come across anything in Gnome other than the memory leak (which is already fixed and awaiting release) - even that doesn't bother me too much.

FreeBSD builds on the common sense. Using the latest ideas true to it's motto serving the community.

While try Linux, where is the peg of idealism in it. GPL 2/3/Affero. What substantial progress has that given us, except fancy technical names.

1. X11/X.Org make precision monitor support (especially DPI) a royal PITA

2. Perpetually broken video card drivers mean basic acceleration can't be relied on.

3. GTK and Qt just don't have the polish of Metro or Cocoa. I think both are prettier than Win32.

4. The comparison isn't all one-sided: Windows definitely has its rough patches too. It's making improvements however so Linux has no room to be complacent.

nvidia's binary blobs cause headaches on all distros - this isn't really a distro/linux issue.

It kind of is, since Linux is the one insisting on being actively hostile drivers that aren't part of the kernel source tree.
