Interesting read. OS X and magsafe are the only things I believe Apple did right. With their overpriced proprietary hardware, awful EFI implementation, and lacking opengl and Vulkan support, why would I want a MacBook?

I don't think your analogy is very compelling; if a regular person untrained in driving race cars bought a new race car, crashed it on the way to the grocery store, and then blamed the car rather than their lack of experience driving race cars, I'd definitely find it a bit silly.

If there's anything that people expect to stay constant about Apple is that they will try to tightly control their ecosystem and charge a premium for that. You are right-- you can argue about which way to go, but it is undeniable that the gap has narrowed. Depending on the way VR/AR develops in the near future, that will likely be another battle-line over which they will compete, and it is clear that at least at the outset Microsoft hold a massive advantage.

Can you give a reason why Enter to open a file is ideal, other than just because it's how Windows does it? The Windows Explorer uses Alt+Enter to show the properties of something, and in games and other apps that shortcut means Full Screen. Also, why does Alt+F4 quit an app? What does F4 stand for? Compared to Cmd+Q to Quit or Cmd+W to close it's a lot less intuitive. And so on and so forth.
Really, it doesn't make sense to you that enter would correspond to the most common, least destructive action?
Alt-F4 makes little sense, true, but in almost all windows apps control-q or control-w does exactly the same thing as on osx.
Also, having sane defaults for keys people are likely to press is much more important than /not/ having obscure keyboard shortcuts that users never have to know even exist.

Why Cmd+Q and not Cmd+Esc then? It is frustrating to press Cmd+Q by accident when you intend to press Cmd+W, at least there is a physical separation between F4 and F5, so you can't get it wrong.

Linux file explorers (Nautilus, etc.) aren't exactly a pleasure to use, but then again, as a Linux user, if I have to open a GUI to do something with my files, I'm usually not happy about it in the first place.

Steam has updates like every 2nd day, but have yet to update the UI for proper DPI scaling)

But I do use both Mac and Windows regularly and they both have their quirks, but personally I find Mac to be more polished, but Windows is catching up and Apple has been slacking recently.

FWIW, I have a 2016 13" nTB and have had a few trip over the power cord incidents. The USB-C cord snaps right out almost like magsafe for me... the laptop will get a nice tug and move an inch, but it comes out even on a slick countertop.
