the mods take flagging rights away from people they find abusing it

i would like an option in the settings to disable/enable my ability to flag content. On mobile, I have accidentally flagged things and recall it being challenging to hit the button to unflag.

Or just remove the link from the list view. (Only show the flag link when viewing a particular story.)

(I've also done that by mistake like four times.)

Original HN post flagged: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=27394925

Something else that I find curious is that this entry vanished from front page for a while, and now it's stuck at the bottom, even though it has twice the points in half the time compared with post number #5 (at the time of writing).

That happens once you are flagged or bounced off the front page temporarily. You loose some sort of multiplier and are often placed around spot 15

Elsewhere on HackerNews there are discussions about how GDPR regulations affect the internet entirely - not just in the EU. And there are famous examples how California environmental regulations bring up the quality of products US-wide so everyone benefits from safety and consumer protections not just people in california. In both cases, this is because it's easier to just have ONE version of a product if your market…

That may be what they are doing. And let us be clear - it is bad enough when the major tech companies gladly apply CCP or RUS filtering within those territories. The CCP is the friend of no one but themselves, and they are global expansionists. The RUS govt is an international criminal syndicate masquerading as a govt. If the tech companies start applying those same CCP/RUS standards globally, then the response shoul…

Our companies are more powerful than our governments right now. They censor what they want when they want on behalf of their world view and government bidding.

Looks like it has now been updated and returns images of various tanks and male athletes, but still no images of what seems most relevant to the phrase - the iconic Tiananmen Square photograph that goes by that name.

I get tanks, and men in tank tops. Google image search results are all photos of tank man.

Wow. Yup, the results are being tweaked as we speak, which in-and-of-itself its pretty interesting actually i.e. that the BING keepers manipulate specific results on-the-fly.

I'm not sure that's reassuring/comforting!

https://twitter.com/MikaelThalen/status/1400906032176640004 A Microsoft spokesperson tells me that "accidental human error" is to blame for missing images of "tank man" on its Bing search results. "We are actively working to resolve this." The incident comes on the 32nd anniversary of the Tiananmen Square Massacre.

Do they honestly expect people to believe that?

My theory:

Microsoft’s goal was to hide the tank man images, and only the tank man images, from the other image results.

But an engineer, in an act of defiance, made it so that all results would be hidden, making Microsoft’s agenda stupidly obvious, but making it seem like the engineer did it “on accident”.

dang says elsethread, paraphrased, 'we evaluated that flagged post and figured it was probably legitimately flagged, but after users contacted us^ to say it should be unflagged, so we listened to them and unflagged it'. Good intentions often lead to bad outcomes. The mods have the best possible (and still imperfect) judgement of all of us, and they misread the circumstances, same as those users who flagged it. So the…

> maybe they didn't realize the Contact link exists or reaches the mods! Actually, the Contact link doesn't exist or reach the mods: $ dig mx ycombinator.com [...] ycombinator.com.299 IN MX 10 aspmx.l.google.com. [...] $ telnet aspmx.l.google.com 25 Trying 142.250.141.27... [wait a minute or two] HELO example.com [typed] [wait a minute or two] ^C (The other MX results behave similarly.)

EDIT: HN's contact email is working fine; the evidence presented was known to be invalid before it was posted and used in bad faith to bait the conversation.

It worked fine when I emailed them yesterday using a non-Gmail email client and server. You’re suggesting that all email for YCombinator is down (or, worse, some/all of Google Apps) so that seems worth proving out. I checked and there aren’t any posts today about Gmail or Gapps being down. Diagnostic superpowers, activate!

Are you getting a bounce/timeout from a real email client through a real SMTP server? I know some mail servers I used to operate would reject your telnet test as shown, so I’m not really surprised it failed at a Google SMTP endpoint.

Are you attempting to email them using Gmail, using a third-party commercial service, via a cloud/datacenter-hosted personal SMTP server, or a home internet connection SMTP server?

If the SMTP server is under your control, is TLS correctly configured on it to modern standards? Do your server’s A/PTR records match the hostname it’s configured to use?

This post is on the front page right now (edit: and now also https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=27396783 ) - that's the opposite of "disappearing". I'd have to see links to the other ones. Here's one tip for you guys, from years-long, world-weary experience: if you're coming up with sensational explanations in breathless excitement, it's almost certainly untrue. Edit: ok, here's what happened. Users flagged https:/…

I don't doubt posts are flagged by users as opposed to moderation. But at the same time, it also seems like flagging can be too easily abused, and can lead to accusations of censorship and distrust. (Though I've certainly seen it work well in cases, especially for false/defamatory articles.) But it really does seem like we're at the point where longstanding users need to also be able to vouch for flagged stories, or…

It makes you wonder how much censorship bad actors accomplish in less blatantly obvious ways.
