Or even assaulting and/or arresting the bystander filming.

Do you know what assaulting means? An arrest inst assaulting anyone. Also its not for filming but for not following orders which is exactly what cops are paid do do. If you dont want to get arrested follow the order they give you.

> The whole article make its look like any police interaction is somehow a thread to peoples live. In 2020 in the USA people were twice as likely to get killed by a cop than killed in a mass shooting. Police killed over a thousand people in a single year.

What an absurd comparison. This only tells me that being killed in a mass shooting is very very very unlikely which is in fact true. But being killed by police is also very very very unlikely in fact its de facto zero if you aren't a criminal/drug abuser and comply with police orders.

Breonna Taylor was an EMT that was murdered by police while asleep in her own bed during a no-knock raid.

There is no data to suggest that she was a criminal or drug abuser.

Tamir Rice was a 13 year old kid playing with a toy gun (which have orange tips to denote that they are toys). He was murdered by police, too.

Duncan Lemp was executed by police shooting into his home at 4:30AM whilst he was totally asleep.

There are many other examples, this is not an occasional, anecdotal thing. (Additionally, under the law in the US, the penalty for being suspected of crime or drug dealing is not "summary execution by police". It involves a trial.)

Your claim is false.

Being pulled over is incredibly safe, there's almost zero chance of being shot for people who aren't antagonizing. Policing in America is overly assertive, but remember that almost 1/2 the people they pull over have guns, it's dangerous for them as well creating a bad kind of civil standoff. While more police training and oversight is necessary, it won't materially change the dynamic in any kind of statistically cons…

I think you've put your finger on it. Because guns are ubiquitous in the US, the police are afraid every single time they interact. This leads to mistakes, sometimes deadly ones. "Almost zero chance" times millions of interactions means a few very, very bad outcomes. Those outcomes may be clustered around certain people who already have a tenuous relationship with the police. Again, a small amount of racism times a l…

The TV show 'COPS' would demonstrate very vividly how insane some people can be and of course they are 'selected clips' - but when they film in Canada ... almost nothing happens.

In LA, there used to be (still are?) news items on the 'Helicoptor following the chase' which, as a Canadian, was dumbfounding to me.

Youtube vides of 2 police arresting a man, 4 hands on him, they're putting on the cuffs and them bam he goes for his gun (!!!) - literally right has 2 officers have him under control, the assailant tries to kill the cops.

Traffic cops have people 'take off' on them far too often.

So combine this with the very real availability of guns, and you have quite dangerous situations.

Again, I would repeat that the cops are still overzealous, but unless you're antagonizing you have little to worry about other than maybe a cop in a bad mood.

It's not populist for people to have to deal with the fact that Americans themselves are statistically poorly behaved when confronting cops.

Americans often see a funny bit of behaviour on the news and think 'Oh, that's so Florida' - but for people outside the US the entire country looks like 'Florida'.

This seems like an egregious abuse of statistics. You, a randomly-selected individual within the borders of the United States, are extremely unlikely to be murdered by police--or anyone else. You, a person who is in the process of being pulled over by US police, have just had the likelihood of being murdered by police skyrocket. Is it more likely than not? Of course not! But it's dramatically more likely than it was…

You imply that you are more likely to get killed if you aren't white but this is the classic narrative that you where told by media. The whole George Floyd and BLM nonsense. There is absolutely no evidence that this claim is correct. There are disproportional more police interactions with non-whites and thus more such police interaction can result in a killing. That does not put a randomly-selected individual that ha…

This is factually incorrect and disgusting. Please, keep this racist nonsense off of this website.

You complete ignore what I wrote and post random links that make no sense in the context.

My stance is you should film.

My stance is you should not interfere in any way with police as a bystander unless you ask first and get permission to help.

My stance is that if you get ordered to do something you have to follow that order. If you dont, you are in fact interfering and you are subject to lawful arrest.

The fact that police can give you illegitimate order doesn't change that.

For example they may not have the authority to demand you to stop filming but they can order you to leave the scene or hold appropriate distance. And various other stuff like to pull your hands out of your pocket. Its relevant to the safely of themself and everyone around. If you dont comply they have the right to arrest you. And as soon as they tell you that you are under arrest you lose your right to record or at lest you right to hold and point the cam the way you want. And yes there rules all apply even if you think the police is doing something illegitimate or brutal or whatever. You are not a judge and your subjective interpretation of the situation does in no way change what what you are and aren't allowed do do. Its really not that hard of a concept.

Since you like links here is one for you https://youtu.be/qiZi-BpzFuc?t=72 As you can see people seriously think they need to film stuff because a dozen officers clearly are trying to kill someone and the only thing that could save the person are the bystander with phones. But police keeps them at a distance so they can kill the person anyway without video evidence. After 90 minutes they gave up because too many bystanders could potentially film the killing. Brave brave bystanders saving people form state funded killer pigs. People are so out of touch with reality they act like little kids who insist that all adults are complicit to be mean to them for no reason.

>I expect the police to not violate my rights. Sure, we all do but if they violate your rights anyway, it does not give you the right to resist, ignore orders or even defend yourself... yes that a hard one to swallow for many people egos but that's how it is. If there would be a way around this problem I'm sure we would have found out. But you just can't fight someone with a state given authority/power who most likel…

I think there are actually a lot of palliative measures: stop giving police surplus military equipment, end qualified immunity, pay misconduct settlements from police pensions, ban police unions, decriminalize drugs and prostitution. But frankly, I don’t think anything short of defunding is likely to work. Like you said, the root of the problem is that police have a monopoly on force, so the only solution is to drast…

I definitely did not say the root of the problem is that police has a monopoly on force. I said that it is the reason why people should comply regardless of potential rights being violated. Because you have to defend your rights with legal means not with force. Its exactly the same as if your neighbor violates your rights.

The use of force as a means to enforce your rights is illegal. There are some extreme cases where you can use force namely self-defense and defending others who are in imminent danger. This is not an act of enforcing you rights this an act of defense. The right to use force voids as soon as the "danger" is gone not when your "right is restored". Self defense is almost always not applicable if the "danger" comes from a police officer. Being arrested even if not lawful does not make it a kidnapping and you resisting isn't self-defense.

I have no clue how you think police should do its job if they do not have a monopoly on force. It quite obviously who would have the monopoly then, the criminals.

Also how about teaching people that although bad cops exist most cops wont kill you if you comply (this is the statistical reality). And that no matter what you did or being accused of doing your best option is to comply (even for mass murders, rapists and terrorists, statistics show that this behavior significantly prolongs their life).

The other political measurement you suggested are up for debate and whether or not they work needs to be evaluated while the simply act of complying can be done by anyone right now. And there is zero negative side effect.

Who are the criminals you’re afraid of giving the upper hand here? Speeders? Homeless people sleeping where others don’t want them to? Kids caught with a dime bag?

If there’s a statistical reality here, it’s that hardly any of the situations in which we call on police would be likely to result in violence at all. But if you send police, that is inevitably what will happen — because violence is literally the only tool in their toolbox, the sole reason they even exist in the first place.

And predictably, if you imbue people with the power to commit violence free from consequence, that is what they do. In almost every police encounter, they are the ones escalating the risk of violence. So it’s perfectly reasonable to fear for your life during a police encounter, because we see over and over and over again that there are plenty of cops who relish that power, and plenty more who will close ranks to protect them.

Compliance may be the best self-preservation strategy for individuals in the moment. But it does nothing to address the systemic issue.

> Breonna Taylor was an EMT that was murdered by police while asleep in her own bed during a no-knock raid.

That's absolutely not what happened. At worst this was horrible police work at "best" it was a freak accident. There is zero reason to believe that anyone was murdered.

Not going into the other cases because quite frankly it does not falsify my claim even if they are in fact what you say they are.

My calm was that its very very very unlikely which is true even if it happens. Just like the mass shooting you original brought up that is also very very very unlikely to kill you even trough it could happen.

That does not make "police interaction somehow a threat to people" (the original statement) Just like the lottery does not make you a millionaire. And boarding a plane doesn't make you die in a fireball. You gotta look at probability in a rational way. The risk of being killed by police is very very low and as said above by not being a criminal/drug abuser and by complying it gets even lower. So low that its practically non-existent. You do dozens of things every day that have a way higher probability of killing you. Like taking a shower. The statement that taking a shower somehow poses a threat to people is still absurd and wrong.

I couldn't care less who that may be. No criminal should should ever have the upper hand. And its obvious that if the criminal which poses the least risk to ordinary people would have the upper hand then all the other criminals would too. Even the ones that dont exist in the current situation.

I disagree with the rest of you assumptions. You should probably talk with a cop and ask them what they are doing all day long. Most of them hardly ever draw their gun, many go trough a lifetime of service and never shoot a single bullet outside of training.

Idk from where you distorted view on police work comes from and I dont see much value in further discussion this.
