Edit: lol at the downvotes. Anytime someone talks about something obvious regarding society/wealth inequality, all the wannabe Elon Musks come out to demand sources. But infringe on their dear property rights or otherwise critique the current economic system, and oh boy, they have that downvote finger ready. Cheers.

This was not free speech, as has been defined by the US Supreme Court for at least a century, because "fighting words" (speech that may lead to the harm or limitation of rights of others) are not considered free speech.

Talking about racism and other bad ideas is protected, but suggesting sedition and bodily harm is not.

This is good to know in the coming days when the fascists come out of the woodwork.

Parler is (or was) the #1 downloaded app on the App Store, according to some metrics. You don't need an algorithm to see that. It's a PR nightmare, and this is the common sense thing for any global brand to do

I don't understand - obviously being #1 will not inherently result in being banned, so the implication is that Parler is bad. If that's the case, doesn't it basically just beg the question I posed in the parent post?

The bigger social networks at least invest enough in moderation teams to give themselves some legal cover. From what I understand, Parler's community moderation is a tiny team that's wildly understaffed for the task they need to accomplish. The question now will be whether this constitutes negligence on their part. Sounds like Apple thinks it does.

This is very bad for democracy. Who gets to decide what constitutes disinformation, racism or hatred? If you have someone who decides who can speak and what they are allowed to say, that person holds all the power and is hence a dictator. Having a dictator isn't very democratic.

Well these last two seem pretty par for the course for illegitimate claims been promoted as legitimate. At a certain point the line of absurdity has been crossed at it is not the duty of society to constantly debunk illegitimate claims.

In this particular case, Parler has been host to a number of specific violent threats against the Vice President and members of Congress. Those threats are a crime under Title 18 Section 871 of the United States Code. Threats to others could constitute assault in many jurisdictions.

I really see it as no surprise that platforms hosting Parler entry points are concerned about this. They could be potentially held liable since this type of speech is not protected by the first amendment.

Moving the discourse further away from the light won't help cure the divide in this country. We need more discussion, not less. We need to get both sides talking to each other not to themselves about each other.
