Can servers be ad supported? Like can I run a Google ad on my own instance?

We know how much we all love ads. Let's have more of them!

I see absolutely no reason why an instance might not decide to fund itself on local ads. I see no reason why you couldn't choose an ad-supported or non-ad instance

Paul Graham famously started to use Mastodon (but has not written anything there since last year). But the HN Status emergency “is HN down” channel is still only on Twitter. It used to be publicly readable at https://twitter.com/HNStatus >. But now, if HN was to go down, only logged-in Twitter users would be able to see why.

>if HN was to go down, only logged-in Twitter users would be able to see why That's probably close to 99% of HN users

Projection probably. I use my twitter account so seldom, I'm definitely in the 1%.

But then, I'm probably in the 0.5% who if HN happens to be down, will check back the following day instead of worrying.

If anything, nature is healing. I’ve noticed at least 1 community return to forums due to all of this ( https://mholdschool.com/ ), and while unfortunately AFAIK there isn’t any good FLOSS software for it, it’s certainly a start.

Zig community at reddit was closed recently and they decided to make its discourse instance as the primary discussion center.

Uggh. I only use twitter to follow critical (life-and-death) emergency broadcasts from our local fire department. Is there a viable alternative for them to use now that twitter is going to block most of our county’s residents?

A mailing list? A WhatsApp broadcast? Sms messages?

This killed nitter. Fuck. I guess I'm done with Twitter. Reddit is in Eternal September. Twitter is login-walled. If HN is next, I'll probably be mostly done with the Internet. This version of the Internet is starting to suck. :(

I'm cautiously optimistic about Lemmy. Anyone can spin up an instance, so it's decentralized, but instances are connected, so there's community. It may still be rough around the edges, but to me it feels like the spirit of the old phpBB forums combined with almost 20 years of lessons learned from Reddit.

IIUC it's federated, not decentralized. Still pretty good but if a server drops offline it will be pretty inconvenient. The communities on that server will be dead.

Matrix does better as the rooms are decentalized so can continue even if the creating server drops offline. But user accounts are still only federated.

Why are centralized businesses doomed to fail? It’s been the primary organizational mode for the last 10,000 years.

Pressure to squeeze out profits continously until there’s nothing but a husk left.

Except weren’t all these services running at a loss?

How would smaller companies do better?

Taking into consideration how much Spez thinks of himself as a Musk, we should be expecting Reddit to implement the same feature soon. We are just sitting by the sideline watching as the internet we all loved slowly dies in the hands of greedy corporations. This is truly a sad state of affairs.

The Internet I loved was full of random forums and text websites. If anything, I'm rejoicing and hoping this will mean less centralized forums. Y'all realize you can just not use reddit and Twitter right? You can host your own forum on the Internet

The discovery hurdle is too big for me to rejoice.

Which government agency/city council exclusively uses such services for updates?

It's quite common in Nova Scotia. During the mass shooting, emergency alerts were sent out exclusively via Twitter: https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/nova-scotia/rcmp-twitter-aler...

Which is a bad idea. They should be using the damn emergency alert system.
