I believe IBM produced a high resolution monitor which was a single panel, but acted as if it were 4 smaller displays, complete with 4 separate display input cables. Something similar could technically be done to re-use lower-res, but higher-speed existing display controller parts on 4K panels.
Two special display input cables (DMS-59). IBM T221. I have one. It's... hard. The max I could drive it was on 25Hz -- two 1920x2400@25Hz panes besides each other. Watching a movie on it was a weird experience so I set it aside. If someone has 4 DVI outputs, you could drive it surely at 41Hz which would make a huge difference ( the monitor is up for sale :) ).

Admittedly 30 Hz sucks and the colors are not up to par with an IPS panel, but overall the Seiki offer a great deal for the price. 30 Hz is awful. The brightness problem is blow out and bleed. It is "very bright" it is so bright that when doing any sort of calibration the whites bleed on everything. The contrast ratio is good due to the excessive brightness, which means the blacks still suck. Horrible highlights and horrible shadows. The calibration you can do in the OS is limited, as I said, I have two different sets of hardware equipment for c…

For a workstation, how is 30Hz refresh a problem? I could understand that wouldn't be ideal for gaming, but if your daily use is that if reading static text that doesn't move around, is it really a problem. If this were a CRT, I'd agree with you, but as an LCD panel, I don't understand why the lower refresh rate is a problem. It isn't as though the screen will flicker.

Yes, there is. I have side-by-side 60Hz and 120Hz monitors, and window dragging for example on the 120Hz one is much much smoother (I had to buy a gaming mouse, because most normal mice won't update at more than 100Hz I think). And movies don't have this jerky motion where 60Hz doesn't quite exactly divide with 24 fps that movies use.
Well, in my day, when you moved a window all the computer showed was a grey square - no fps issues there. Sorry, had to say it.

Jakob Nielsen's research on "ideal size" is 48Kx32K (1200 dpi) @ 1200 fps for perfect image quality. See http://www.nngroup.com/articles/how-much-bandwidth-is-enough... Just the productivity decrease alone makes this monitor extremely expensive in the end, despite its price.

You must not work from lengthy spec documents that often.
I use a logitech m500 with the inertial scrollwheel, so scrolling through long documents is easy. Also, word's navigation pane makes it easy to jump from point to point. The 22 inch screen is just large enough to see the full page width and the nav pane side by side.
When implementing long spec documents, i print them out and mark off the parts i've completed. There would be no added value from having a second screen where i do that digitally for me personally. (I did try it once.)

There are a couple of things as a developer. 1. You end up developing really long lines of code that might upset other developers 2. I'm on my second Seiki, my first one died and it took 1 mo. to receive a replacement.
