IMO, if you hate Elon so much, you shouldn't be visiting his website. You look very odd and silly if you still want to engage with it and just use a different UI layer (i.e., "XCancel", "Nitter".) If they want you to have an account to read the post and you want to read the post, create an account, log in, and move on. If you don't want to do that, nobody is forcing you to view a public website. There's alternatives…

My municipality, and many other governmental entities, post official updates to x.com

have you asked them to switch or to post to many places at once?

https://xxcancel.com is up and redirecting to working Nitter instances.

Is there a way to make Firefox autoredirect to that?

https://einaregilsson.com/redirector/

Include pattern:

  ^https?://x.com/(.*)
Redirect to:

  https://xxcancel.com/$1

That's not how ToS work though. ToS are contracts. If you don't sign the contract nobody can sue you for violating it. > No different from "if I roll a car down a hill and it hits something at the bottom, how can you hold the car liable?" That's the difference between criminal and civil justice. You don't need to sign a law for it to bind you, but for contracts you do.

> If you don't sign the contract nobody can sue you for violating it. But terms of service are contracts which you sign by agreeing. Courts have looked somewhat favorably on "I didn't read that" defenses, but accepting the agreement is a legal contract between you and the service provider.

My point is that you don't have to accept anything.

Do we actually have proof that X is more popular now than it was then?

X is either dying, or this is a 550+ comment discussion about how we cannot divorce ourselves from it. It can't be both, Schroedinger's X.

Good. X is the public square. The algorithm is superior to any other social media site out there right now. They are right to charge for the API and right to shut down impostor sites. What did they say around 2020? If you don't like it - BUILD YOUR OWN.

> They are right to charge for the API

I might just leave that there...

Of more concern, the Nitter github repository was permanently archived a couple of days ago. https://github.com/zedeus/nitter

On that same page: UPDATE: Following legal advice, the Nitter project will continue. More details will be announced soon.

That update was made 9/6: 5 days prior to archival and on the same day xcancel.com previously also "returned". I can find no public updates regarding Nitter project after the 9/11 archival.

Maybe X hasn't increased userbase, and nobody uses BlueSky, and there are some people on HackerNews who complain a lot about X.

How many of the userbase are real people and how many are bots?

I don't know, but the people that hate Elon and blame everythng on Jews are on X, whereas the people that don't aren't on Bluesky.

There's no reason you can't abolish login walls while still serving ads. > The internet has this innate expectation that everything digital be totally free Capital interests have this innate expectation that everything must be profitable. What rubs me the wrong way about statements like this, is that it is almost always said by people who totally miss that they are advocating for things that are personally profitable for them. A website that allows you to skirt paywalls, is immensely profitable to the end user. That same end user, who detests the idea of having to spen…

I do not "immensely" benefit from free access to servers that will relay public microposts. I don't think my accesses even cost X a dollar per year. I would happily step in with my own server to replace 10x or even 100x the server resources I consume if it was possible. And if it was actually expensive they should be jumping at a way to make it possible.
